Houston has a new liberal mayor by 4000 votes

Yesterday Houston voted for Mayor. A Liberal Democrat career politician Sylvester Turner versus a Conservative businessman Bill King.

The Liberal won by 4000 votes out of about 210,000 votes cast in a city of 2.1 million.

Both candidates ran on hiring more police officers. Turner was supported by our current Mayor, the Chronicle newspaper and the Police and Fire Department organizations. Turner also mentioned he would champion a "living wage" in Houston.

Turner did not rule out raising taxes. Bill King was opposed to raising taxes and promised to fix the pension system which is leading us into a Chicago Detroit like situation. Both mentioned potholes. Turner supports LBGT rights and the bathroom ordinance which was defeated by 61% at the election a month ago.

Always the media hog, Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee was at the podium last night with the new mayor as he made his speech after being declared the winner by the media.

As a representative of the legislature Turner voted against anything that could be viewed as pro gun.

If you are a Houston resident and you didn't vote yesterday, this is your result.

I voted yesterday in the South Houston area.
I entered the voting area about 11:15am.
As I entered, there were 3 others voting and 4-6 workers.
One of the workers asked the other "how many have you had today" (remember, polls open at 7am)
As of 11:15am, the worker replied "35". The person who answered, was 1 of 2 people, who was responsible to give you the "ticket" with the voting code you used.
So assuming both had similar numbers, there were only 70 (or so) people voting in over 4 hours.
I was totally SHOCKED at how low the numbers were.

I agree with your comment "if you didnt vote, this is your result"
It is just ridiculous that only about 10% of the voting public showed!

Hopefully the towns/cities around Houston will NOT elect liberals, and that will keep the city somewhat surrounded. Seems like they'd prefer to turn Houston into another Detroit or Chicago. Sad business right there. Hopefully this new mayor will not change the Chief of Police's mind on how to handle Open Carry, or other firearms related matters.

Sad times for Houston. It doesn't seem like the same Houston I left in 1996.

Can you elaborate? I'm not aware of him being convicted of a felony.

From Wikpedia,"On gun control, Turner opposed measures to limit lawsuits against gun or ammunition manufacturers, allowing concealed handguns on higher education campuses, and rescinding the authority of local governments to ban concealed weapons on public property. He also opposed measures that would reduce the number of training hours required to receive a concealed handgun license. Turner supported a bill that prohibited the use of state funds for the enforcement of federal firearms regulations. He also advocated abandoning the "pick-a-pal system", where judges appoint commissioners who then can pick whoever they want to serve on grand juries."

That's too bad. The Leg should make it clear NOW they are not going to bail out cities that can't control their spending and pensions.

I can't find anything on him being a felon. Are you by chance thinking of Qball, ie Quannel X?

Or "Quannel the 10th" as I've always called him.
