I will be doing some flying during Christmas break as my wife and I travel to Florida to visit family. I've got everything to meet TSA and AA requirements for checking a pistol, but I'm worried about my holsters. I've bringing several of them with me and I'm cautious about putting them in my checked bag with my Glock. If the airline were to happen to lose my bag, I'd hate to lose several hundred dollars worth of holsters with it.

I didn't see any rules about flying with a holster in your carry on bag, but was curious if anyone else has done so. If you have, did you experience any issues during the security process?

If I've completely missed something and it is in fact against the rules to travel with a holster in your carry on, I'd obviously like to know that as well.

I always put it in my carry-on bag. There are no rules against it.

Your firearm case is locked with a non-tsa lock and your checked bag is not. My uneducated guess would be they the former is most secure, unless you bring the holster on the carry on bag.

I fly with the holster in my carry on. For a lot of holsters, I imagine they would have a hard time knowing what they're looking at when they see them on the x ray machine

And roll it around a lot at the range to try to pick up as much residue as you can. Always wondered about that as I've read a couple of stories (that may be just that) about not shooting for a couple of days before flying for just that reason.

Slight side note, but when I was skydiving competitively I would always carry on my rig when traveling. Talk about some looks!

I would never do that. However, I would like to watch someone I don't know try just for my own satisfaction.

I knew a guy who had his spare mag / flashlight carrier confiscated from his carry on. He wanted to put it in his checked bag, but something about the lithium batteries in the light cant go under the plane, so he just put the whole thing in his carry on.

A bent piece of plastic is a threat to national security...

I would not bring holsters through security. You can do what you want. I think the chances of them getting snatched out of your checked bag is less than some nanny TSA flunkie flexing their authority and taking them from you.

I can attest to residue.... We dove hunt in new Mexico. Plenty of farm fertilizer, gun powder residue on gun bags and gear sitting in the open beds of trucks driving through frac well heads and tanks.

Good idea to wipe gun cases off with a soapy rag and then wash your hands before clearing security after checking bags. (TSA told me this the first time we lit up the test machine)

CPAP machines really draw attention lately.

Having said that I have carried holster in carry on bag.

On Friday, I flew to North Carolina with my holster in my carry on and had no issues. I have a kydex holster so I imagine it doesn't hold as much gun shot residue as a leather would, but it didn't draw any attention.
