I've have a BCM 5.56 1:7 twist AR. That I have a red dot on. I'd like to get some glass for it. I'll be shooting close quarters out to a few hundred yards.

What works for you?

There really isn't a scope for close quarters out to "a few hundred yards." You have to be realistic about what you want the scope for. A 3-9 or 1-4 variable is fairly versatile but limited in distance. Another option is a magnifier for your red dot.

The Leupold Hog 1-4x is nice.

All you need is a 1-4 power for what you described. People today tend to go crazy on scopes buying 14-25 power scopes when they don't need them.

Take a look at the Vortex Strike Eagle 1-6x 24 (30mm scope), illuminated, retailing around $329 atm.

Looks nice, clear. the illumination works well, although there is only one off position ( some illuminated have an off position between every level of brightness ). Haven't mounted it yet, just getting happy grin looking out the window :P It does, of course, come with the Vortex VIP warranty - highly touted, doesn't matter what happened repair/replace at no further cost after making the original purchase. Also transfers with the scope to any new owner should you ever decide to part with it.

OT: I just picked one up at a really good price from Sportsman's Guide when they had a double your membership discount coupon, + I got a double discount and free shipping for renewing my club membership (total of 3x member discount), ended up paying around $230 (plus having to buy membership renewal of $30). Also put 600 rd of PPU 5.56 for $170 after the 3x membership discount, but that's back-ordered.

Great scope for the money

It's expensive, but this is how I did it:



I installed a Trijicon TA01 ACOG on my carry handle (there are adapters for rail mounting). This is a 4x fixed scope with BDC markings out to 800 yards.

On top of that I put a Trijicon RM04 RMR (miniature red-dot). It has no magnification and allows for heads-up, two eye open close quarters shooting.

If you like this route, you could get an ACOG clone and mount something like a Burris Fastfire on top and save a bunch of money.

What Pawpaw said. The 4x32 ACOG is hard to beat, with just super glass. I own a few scopes, including a 4-16x50mm Vortex Viper PST (which I like very much), a Leopold 1.5-5x32mm, a Bushnell Elite Tactical 1-6x24mm, a SWFA SS HD 5-20x50, and my 4x32 BAC ACOG, and of all of those, the Trijicon scope has hands down the best glass. They are pricey, and the eye relief is finicky (which doesn't much matter on an AR that doesn't recoil much), but they are so worth it.

But if an ACOG is out of your budget, Vortex optics are a good bargain for what you get. My next scope purchase is going to be a 2-10x32mm Viper PST for my SCAR 17. You can find them for around $799. On the 7.62 FN I'll do 8" splatter targets stuck to the center of a silhouette sized targets at 200yards, not really a precision rifle but it has a a bullet drop turrent set for 5.56 graduated to 600 - for my purposes trajectory is close enough out to 400 yards

Good for both CQB and to mid range. It's a good compromise of both

I third the Trijicon ACOG. If you've got the coin, it's nearly impossible to beat.
