I am looking at buying a sling for my rifle (you know, one of those black automatic assault rifles) The one I see advertised at Midway is a CQB tactical single point sling with dual bungee straps that stretch up to 3". My question is would this type of sling be better than a nylon webbing sling?

You'll likely get a lot of different opinions regarding slings. My preference is a two point sling. The main advantage of a two point over a single-point is that I can transition to the pistol while moving the rifle behind me muzzle up. Single-point will leave the rifle muzzle down, which could end up sticking the muzzle in the ground if you need to kneel behind cover -- of course flash hiders and compensators getting plugged with mud might not be as likely to cause the gun to grenade as plugging the barrel with mud...

I like the 2-point with pull and release tabs to adjust the length.

I had a one point sling. My experience has been that while just walking with rifle on one point sling, (there is no such thing as an assault rifle) it allows the rifle to bounce and the more you move the more one of your hands needs to be used to control the bounce. (if the rifle is carried in the front and you do not control the bounce your forward progress could be impeded by actions that could even make your voice go up a couple if octaves)
I switched to a two-point sling, and the problems with bounce during movement was eliminated and the two-point sling allows more choices in how the rifle can be carried without having to dedicate one of my hands to bounce control.

I like the Magpul MS3. Good, sturdy and easily adjustable. It also converts from single point to two point very easily, do you can carry either way.

I have the MS3 QD version on my AR, you can switch from single point to two point quickly and easlily.

I also like a two point sling. I didn't get one with any bungee material over concerns about bounce. I have one with a pull tab for quick adjustment either way. When I first got it I put it on and left it on for a while thinking it would be useful that way. I keep my carbine next to my bed and after some trial and experimentation found that keeping the strap on like this was more trouble than it was worth, so off it came. However, I still use it on the range when doing different stuff.

I have two padded Viking Tactical slings and like them a great deal. If I ever buy another, it will be the Padded Vickers Sling from Blue Force Gear.

Both slings operate similarly, but the Vickers doesn't leave a tail hanging when you pull it up short. The padding will keep the sling from digging into your shoulder.

All mine are Magpul although I only use it as 2 point. Heard good things about Viking but don't have theirs.

I shoot Carbine matches pretty regularly. Slings are very valuable in how we shoot our matches as we will usually have a stage where you transition to pistol. Went to a match recently and realized that I had left my sling at home. Was able to use the strap on my range bag and some 550 cord...but I prefer the Magpul sling.
