Video shows a group of "refugees" attacking a man who they do not know has a concealed carry license and a firearm

Well, he does have a gun....is he really a cop? or a mere citizen? The only French I know besides how to say "yes" is "cheese omelet"....which I learned from a Steve Martin routine. Perhaps TAM can shed some light after watching the video.

I saw this on Drudge Report's Facebook feed a few days ago and someone on there, who claimed to speak a little french, said that the man identified himself as a police officer or possibly some kind of military police officer. The person was upfront that they were not fluent but that they were pretty certain that they could make that out.

I sort of figured he was some kind of cop. There is another video of a "concealed carrier" shooting armed robber in an obviously Latin American country...turned out he was actually an undercover cop in Venezuela.

The guy with the gun is a cop called a gendarme investigating some surly youths up to no good; the youths are black, but they don't have a noticeable "Muslim" accent (or North African... lots of black Muslim folk in France are called "pieds-noirs" and have a distinctive way of speaking.) It's towards the end of whatever encounter there was, so I don't know the context of why he's there, but the narrator starts by saying, "as the gendarme is leaving, they throw glass bottles at him. As he's leaving, the policeman's thoughts turn to the worst scenario." Then the dude comes up with a bat for no reason and the cop says, "what are you doing with that bat!" The youth then apparently takes a cue from all the thugs in America and says, "touche-moi avec ça, 'shoot me with that, man, come on, shoot me!'" The narrator says, "the gendarme with his hand on the weapon does what he needs to to not shoot the young man." "Turn back, walk backwards away, you all are acting like fools." Then the youths puff up and say things about his grandma I can't write here (literally!) The narrator says that the cop's main worry is to make sure that the cameraman and the people on the street make it back to their cars 100 meters away without being hurt. The youths shout, "you come back here, we'll beat your heads in with this baseball bat!" Then the cop says, "you can make it to the cars from here."

Interesting video. If they are Muslims who just speak good French, it shows the problem France really is facing now. But Muslim or not, that cop showed a lot of professionalism and restraint!

I do speak French, and the person with the gun as well as his companions are identified in the video as police. As far as I know, it is very difficult for a "common" citizen to obtain permission to carry a concealed pistol, let alone actually own a pistol.

In France, to buy a firearm, a hunting licence or a shooting sport license is necessary. All semi-automatic rifles with a capacity greater than 3 rounds, all handguns and all rifles chambered in 'military' calibres, including bolt action, require permits. These are known as B1, B2 and B4 type permits. Firearms are divided into eight categories that determine the regulations that apply to their possession and use. France also sets limits on the number of cartridges that can be kept at home (1000 rounds per gun).

The total number of firearms owned by an individual is also subject to limits (not possible to have more than 12 authorizations/permits on B1, B2 and B4 type firearms). As of September, 2013, France has a capacity limit of 20 rounds for handguns; one needs a permit for category one semi-automatics that have a capacity greater than 3 rounds. Fully automatic firearms are illegal for civilian ownership.

I'm not certain what kind of gun he is carrying in that video, but it looks like a hammer-fired semiautomatic........I'm guessing in 9mm. This wiki page says that the standard firearm issued to French police officers since the early 2000s is a Sig Pro 2022, but before that it was a PAMAS G1, which is a Beretta 92 manufactured under license in France: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Police_(France). I can't tell for sure what the guy in the video has, but if you freeze frame and zoom in, the hammer/beavertail profile looks more Beretta-ish than Sig-ish.

That's what I thought at first, but I think that is just part of the holster that looks like a cylinder, and there is definitely something that looks like a beavertail......but I could be wrong.

Just returned from a vacation in Paris and Barcelona and, no, there's no civilian concealed carry in France. i searched what seemed to be the whole interweb and found nothing to even suggest it would be possible. Didn't seem to need it, though, because there were soldiers EVERYWHERE. We saw a lot of Africans, etc., but managed to avoid any place like that in the video. Felt pretty safe the whole time.

We did get to visit a gun shop in Barcelona. Had a very large collection, and when I asked about a Llama .380, the salesman took me into the vault and showed me one, along with a lot of other neat stuff. A mini-1911, with a locking breech (newer models were straight blow-back), exactly like the one I used to have. He could have sold it to me, but I never would have gotten it onto a plane or through customs at Heathrow or Chicago.

In the face of misguided laws, any man of good conscious will do whatever is necessary to defend himself and his family. There is no guarantee that he is legally carrying.

Given the criminal behavior many of these so-called refugees exhibit, why does BO want to let them come here?

Europeans are arming at as fast a rate as they can because of the horrors created by these refugee/criminals, but BO wants us to disarm.

Didn't stop 127 people being killed in Paris, and a lot more being wounded....or help those people at the Charlie Hebbo office. I guess they weren't EVERYWHERE. I think people still get murdered in France too.

Apparently some French also recognize the utility of self-defense. My phone is making posting a URL a problem but the story is posted at dailystar.co.uk from 1/15. In summary, people are applying to carry self-defense spray and, get this, gas powered air pistols. No I'm really not kidding.

"Soldiers everywhere" was the case when I was last there in 2005, and it was the case when I lived in Paris in 1961/62. In 1961, it didn't stop OAS terrorists from blowing up the front of the building 2 or 4 doors down from my grammar school building.

I've been watching a show called "Missing" on Amazon Prime. It takes place in France and most of the plainclothes cops carry revolvers.
