Back up guns? Advantages and disadvantages and philosophy?

I open carry and conceal carry - I never carried a back up gun before - relying on my knife and retention to maintain my firearm in case of a grab/scuffle.
But, wondering why or why not this is a wise choice and the philosophy behind it? I carry large semi autos so with extra magazine I am packing alot of weight already - wondering if it is practical considering both my guns are heavy (M&P45 and M9) extra weight is going to be something to consider
Just wanting thoughts from those that do and the advantages of the practice as well as disadvantages.
Thanks
Keith

I think it depends on the circumstances. Some police carry BUGs because they are often exposed to danger and might need one. I certainly don't think that's the case for me, so I don't carry one. If someone is required to go to dangerous places, a BUG might make sense.

Glock 26 Primary IWB
plus
Glock 26 BUG in pocket Desantis Nemesis Holster ... both concealed, have for many years
2 is 1, 1 is none
Parts/Mags interchange, grab a BUG faster than a reload in some instances,
Also several in my Church have CHL, One was a retired LEO, but often come unarmed, they know they can borrow my spare.
No reason not to

Primary is a double-stack 1911 in .45 acp.
BUG (until yesterday when I gave it to my Daughter) Kimber Micro Carry .380 acp
I don't carry the BUG expecting to lose my primary (though that could happen), but because damage to (or failure of) my primary would leave me in a tight spot. A small, light BUG is hardly noticed even when carried all day. I just feel better knowing I have two weapons I can access. An 'insurance policy'...if you will.
Advantages and Disadvantages, probably equal out for most folks under most conditions.
Philosophy: Preparedness (must be reasonable in scope of course). I like redundancies...where my life might be at stake.
