Tomorrow is the 30th anniversary of the Challenger Disaster.
Last night I watched the movie The Challenger Disaster [2013], a TV movie made by the BBC.
I thought is was very well done and informative.
The film describes how physicist Richard Feynman did his own research outside of the official investigation committee to find the cause of the failure.
As with all movies "based on a true story" there has been some criticism about it's accuracy.

I wish I could remember which astronaut came to our refinery and presented a comprehensive analysis of how the culture at NASA evolved to allowed this disaster to occur. He was with a safety consulting company and his presentation was enlightening. I'll have to check it on Amazon.

You mean which "ex-astronaut".

At the end of the movie it makes a point that astronaut Sally Ride provided some inside information about the reliability of the shuttle to Feynman.
She also was one of the few people to support the testimony of Morton Thiokol engineer Roger Boisjoly who testified about the problem with the cold weather and the performance of the booster O-rings.

I have read a paper that analyzed and reported on the NASA culture that allowed this to happen. I will search for the source and post a link.

Just like guns Accidental or negligence.. I Have studied some on and accidents dont happen with guns it is negligence. someone or some co, group messed up in the challenger disaster. Because it was the Govt it was an accident dont you see!

I went out to video it. I had seen previous re-entries so I knew where to look and what to expect. At first I was not sure what was going on, but within a few seconds it was obvious. It was creepy. I went in and turned on TV and they did not know it was over. It was still in the blackout period. I went back out and stuff was still coming down and the plume was still visible. Back to TV and it was still no contact. Well I sure was not going to call them and tell them what happened.

Yes, that was the Columbia disaster.

We just finished watching an older Challenger movie. I had a window seat on the left side of a plane on a flight between Atlanta and Charleston when it happened. We lived in Orlando at the time. As was the local custom, everyone in the area went out to see the shuttle. Mrs. Oldgringo and co-workers were in the Sun Bank, Disney World, parking lot and saw the explosion. I learned about it lunch.

Thanks. The movie has scenes that deal with many of the topics in Appendix F.

Brain fail on my part

I knew that as I read it and somehow my brain changed subjects to the one I personally saw. I guess it is one of those things I will never forget
