Very interesting story.
Gravity waves have been discovered.
Einstein predicted the existence of these waves in his General Theory of Relativity.
Physicists have announced the discovery of gravitational waves, ripples in spacetime first anticipated by Albert Einstein a century ago.

“We have detected gravitational waves. We did it,” said David Reitze, executive director of the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (Ligo), at a press conference in Washington.

I thought from the topic you were talking about surface waves in the ocean, clouds or maybe atmospheric gravity waves https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gravity_wave

Now they are confirmed in space!! :-)

Wow, I thought I was the only one who was nerdy enough here to know or care about LIGO.

Now they can design a gravity wave surfboard.

Was reading that this morning..... VERY, VERY cool stuff!

Guardian article was good too... I read the article on Science..

Roy - Thanks for the link. One person stated that this discovery will win a Nobel Prize!
“It will win a Nobel Prize,” says Marc Kamionkowski, a theorist at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland.

Negative gravity waves, Moriarty, always with the negative gravity waves!

If it is bad, then it will be due to global warming hhuhh climate change.

So are you saying, that space is shrank and elongated when it is hit by those waves?

Bush's fault.

I am not sure who you are asking, but It is the opposite - the shrinking/elongation of space by gravity causes the "waves".
It has been described as gravity "warping" space/time.

It has been quite a few years, but my physics professor had an interesting way of trying to describe it.
He said to envision a large sheet of rubber that is stretched taunt. Then put a mass [weight] in the center of it.
The mass of the sphere [gravity] in the center causes the surface of the rubber sheet [space] to curve towards the sphere.
Think of the sphere as a planet. If you put a lighter object on the rubber sheet it would move toward the heavier object.
This is a way to visualize how the moon and earth are attracted to each other by gravity. :tiphat:

Yep, and warping the space, is just like dropping 2 large-balls in the rubber sheet and the sheet would oscillate like a wave in the pond. In the pond example, water would be displaced vertically while the wave is propagated horizontally. In 3D space, the wave would displace the space in 3D spherically, starting at the center of 2-blackholes.

But this is not news to those in the know....

God said in the holy book of Qur'an: Chapter 21 (Prophets): Verse 104 what it means:
The Day when We will fold the heaven like the folding of a [written] sheet of the records. As We began the first creation, We will repeat it. [That is] a promise binding upon Us. Indeed, We will do it.

now if we could just do this for real

Warp drive is something you need to have a controlled "black-hole" reactor. On other words, matter/anti-matter reactor.
