I was looking online at some gray Glocks. Some have it listed as Cerakote and others do not. I am making a guess that they have all been Cerakoted.

Does anyone know how well these hold up especially with leather holster wear?

It is supposed to be one of the most durable finishes when applied properly. I've seen videos of abuse to Cerakoted parts and the finish held up better than anything else I know of.

BTW, I saw a Wilson combat 1911 that was used daily by a police officer and it looked like new. I cannot remember how long he had it but it more than two years.

I had the slide on my XDs professionally cerakoated titanium right at a year ago, almost to date. Last week while I was rotating out my carry ammo I noticed wear on the end of the slide.
This gun greats carried a lot and always in a leather owb.

I'm a bit disappointed, hopefully the shop that did the cerakoat can fix fairly painlessly.

In 2002 we did 3 Glock 17's and a carbine ourselves, the carbine was seldom used and looks as new, my 17 was shot in 3 matched a week for over 2 years and still shot quite a lot, carried in kydex and leather holsters, it does have holster wear on the bearing edges but looks great to me, I had an OD green Glock before they came out ! I just did the metal, really it had held up as well as my Wilsons have per the use it has had, the trick is in the prep and cleaning, we had the use of a very good sand blaster to strip it with, handled only with NEW white cotton gloves with a dowel in the barrel hole to hold it by. 2 coats and it was great, be sure and remove the channel liner first. One of the 17's had a finger print on it and was redone, we took them straight from the cleaners in Ziplock bags in a cotton glove, not even outside in the air, they looked about as good as it gets. if done right they look & last very good.

I have a Lipsey's all FDE G22 that I have been carrying at the ranch for about 8 months now. All that it has ever been in is a Safariland 7ts 7360, and that new "SafariSeven" material is supposed to be non-abrasive to the firearm's finish and have raised surfaces where only minimal contact is made so that dirt, water and whatnot can fall through and not sit up against the gun like the suede lining in all of the other models do.

Well... I have metal colored rub marks on both sides of the slide where it meets the frame, and up at the top corners where the holster touches it. I have marks completely rubbed off on a few places where the minimal contact points make their minimal contact, and especially up top behind the breech where the ALS hood rubs along the top.

I have carried black glocks in ALS holsters for years and none of the slides on those look half as bad as this cerakoted G22 that I have been carrying for about 8 months. Anyone who has a Safariland ALS holster (7ts or regular) knows what I mean about the marks on the top behind the breech... this cerakoted slide has it 10x worse than my G21 that I have had in a 6360 for about 4 years.

I called last week, and I am sending it in to Glock to have the FDE cerakote removed and refinished in regular black.

If it were to be applied to the frame, I don't imagine that it would hold up any better

So far on my M&P45 it is holding up pretty well. But hey, I expect holster wear on a gun finish to some extent - after all you would not expect a blueing finish on a gun to hold up without holster wear - gives it some character but if it gets to the point that it will bother me I may have it redone - does the finish on some of your FDE guns hold up any better? Mine is just the frame though

The main difference between cerakote and duracoat is that cerakote bakes on and is therefore ready for use more quickly, but they are otherwise equally durable. I think that either coating is far more useful on a long gun that is going to see less daily wear than a pistol.

Self-healing refers to plastic materials that return to their original shape after being deformed.

"Self-sealing" is what you get when I haven't had my coffee yet. Self lubricating is what I meant.

I have a Hi Power that was Cerakoted after I bought it about 5 years ago. It has been a part of my daily carry rotation, and has probably had about a year total being carried in an OWB leather holster. No visible holster wear.
When I take the gun apart, I can see a few spots where it has worn off where surfaces slide against each other.

Glocks come with a tenifer coating, tough stuff, so why remove it?

If anyone would like to see my G17 done in 2002 I will shooting it at the match in Terrell Sat weather permitting, the amount of draws this pistol has on it I am sure had contributed to the wear, the other 2 we did have just been carried and there is nowhere compared to the wear mine has. Also I will have a Wilson 1911 co compare finished if needed. 15 years of wear on it 14 on the G17.
