I have an opportunity to purchase one that I will get to see tomorrow. I will, actually, get to bring it home and check it out for a while and fire it if I can find any ammo for it. The friend of my BIL's would like me to have it checked out for safety and stuff and to see if anyone would be interested in purchasing it. After doing a little research on it I think I'm interested. He says that he was once told it was worth around $1,500 and I'm not seeing anywhere near that online. I'm seeing for sale prices from about $400-$600 with the occasional outlier above $1k.

Do any of you have any experience with this rifle or know what it's range of value should be?

C-dub, Is it a rifle or carbine? They're fine examples of the Mauser, but I'm not seeing any prices in the range you mentioned for either model 1891 Argentine Mausers on GunBroker. You can check the completed items in the advanced search to see for yourself, but I'd say the average actual sale price is much less except for exceptional guns and that was still way under $1M. sending PM with link.
Not sure it's easily found locally, but Graf and Sons stocks 7.65x53 ammo. Hornady, PRVI and Norma

I did some checking around the Mauser forums, online auctions, and online dealers last night, but was to sleepy to post by the time I'd finished.

Several considerations to consider. Are you wanting it as a shooter? If yes, then a sporterized M1891 IMO can be had in the $250-$400 range.
As a collector, I'd ask myself:

1. Is it a rifle or a carbine? Again, IMO I'd be more interested in a carbine. Only about 15,000 were made in the carbine version, vs 33,000 in full length battle rifle version. IE the carbine would be worth more.
2. Does it still have a crest and bayonet lug attached? If ground off, that would diminish the collector value somewhat.
3. Condition: effects the value greatly.

bottom line: $600 seems a little pricey to me. I wouldn't be a buyer for that price.

All very good points. There was a nice sporterized carbine that sold for $215 on gunbroker w/ a scope. Still had the refinished military stock,

I will have more answers once I have it in hand this afternoon. I'm fairly certain it a full length rifle and not the carbine. Also, I will be able to check all markings and numbers.

Please let us know what you find out. Also, bear in mind that the ammo for that thing can be quite expensive, if you want it for a shooter.

Here's what I know so far. I would be up all night researching this, but have to be at work early in the morning, so this is it for a few days.

There is no crest.
All serial numbers are matching.
I appears to be in at least fair to good condition.
It has not been fired in at least 30 years.
It needs a good cleaning.
And inspection by someone more competent and knowledgeable than I.
There is quite a bit of extra etching on it from two previous owners. Names and one TX DL# from many years ago.

All sounds interesting, but I don't have much I can add to the conversation.

All I have here at the house is an Argentine Model 1977 wife, and she's priceless.

Last update tonight. I've got to get some sleep.

The action works pretty good and smoothly. I ran a bore snake through it twice with some cleaner and the bore looks pretty good.

There is no "box" magazine on this one. It appears as though there is a tube magazine. I haven't found anything online yet about this.

The trigger also seems good. There is only a slight curve to it. A very slight curve.
