Application for LTC and the DD-214

Finally decided to obtain a CHL, and made the application online. Paid the discount fee as a veteran with an honorable discharge, only to receive a letter from DPS requesting that I submit an unedited discharge record, or pay an additional fee of $115. After a little research, I discovered that there are actually 2 types of DD-214, an edited and an unedited copy. The edited version does NOT describe the terms of the member's discharge. I only received the edited copy from the Air Force when I was discharged. This caused a 3 week delay in receiving my LTC.
The point?
Those within the system have the advantage, because they know many more of the rules than those who the system is supposed to serve.
Best wishes to everyone.
I am fortunate to have found this forum.

The DD-214 member 1 copy, short form/edited version, does NOT contain the type of discharge on the bottom. Whenever someone is discharged, they receive this as well as the member 4, long form/unedited version, which contains the type of discharge. If you did not receive this, then you can generally request a new DD-214, but it will be a service-2 copy, which contains identical information as the member 4.
As a side note, almost every organization that requests a DD214 either wants the member 4 or service-2 copy. The VA requires it to get healthcare and educational benefits, Texas DPS requires it to get the veteran discount, etc., etc. Here are two links in which you can visit to get a duplicate DD-214:

When you get the long copy of your DD 214 take it to your county courthouse and they will keep it on file for you. That's what I did. When I need a copy of it I go to records and they print it up and stamp it for me. I think they charge two dollars a copy but I can get it right then and there

DD FORM NO.256 1 MAY 50 works also if your Army, may be different with other services but there should be an equivalent.

Your local Veterans Service Office can also assist in getting a copy of your DD-214 and they are pretty quick about it.
