The problems I have with this is..... The trained "Bomb Squad" tech KNOWS this is a lie, that's not a guess, if the "Bomb Squad" has anyone on the team actually trained as a explosives Tech, they can not possibly believe that ammunition was "definitely a big danger" Oh and this was the second time they had been at that house according to the article, earlier for some shotgun shells.

I wonder if they were 40MM mortar shells? That would make more sense. 40 years ago there were no .40 caliber or 10MM cartridges, i'm pretty sure those were not developed until the 80's, correct?

I "assumed" the ammo found was guesstmated to be .40cal S&W.. after all it was rusty and dirty... .40 cal was rusty? is there ANY steel case .40cal?

2nd, not aware of a 40mm mortar shell..

40mm grenade launcher, and 40mm gun. And while the 40mm grenade COULD be a danger if it was an HEDP or HE round I do not believe the media or PD would have missed a chance to call a few rounds of 40mm grenade , ,40cam ammo I mean, if some .40 cal ammo was a big danger requiring evac of the surrounding houses, 75 40mm rounds could have leveled the whole city

I almost went with 41 AE over 40 S&W in the 1980s because all it needed was barrel change from 9mm due to rebated rim

It sounds like the press has it wrong again, either the ammo isn't as old as they say, or the caliber is incorrect. What surprises me is the people who are calling the FD out for old ammo, they must really not have a clue about anything firearms related. I have seen people who actually believe that ammo is so sensitive that it will just spontaneously start going off.

This is the second time old ammunition has been found at the home. Just last week, the bomb squad spent about half an hour disposing of shotgun shells found there.

I could have disposed of it in half the time, at a fraction of the cost.

I wish there were reader comments on the article. They would be so much fun to read.

It took them three hours to drive to home depot and get some leather gloves and ballistic safety glasses. Think of the carnage if one of the rusted brass (ha) casings had flown off the back of that slug when ignited? It could have left a small impression in the subfloor. Probably would have left a crater at least an inch deep and scattered dust for five or six feet. Maybe a respirator, that dust under a house could fill a crawl space after a major explosion. Maybe tie a rope to the guy/gal's leg just in case you need to pull them out.

At some point would taxpayer dollars go further if we just raze the house and start over? Or sell the house to a vintage firearms memorabilia collector. As this is the second visit, there is no telling what all is just lying around.
