Copy of CHL

Does anyone know if it is now the practice for a FFL to make a copy of your CHL during a firearms purchase? Never happened to me until this past week. Just curious.

I have had 1 dealer want to copy mine. Took my business elsewhere.

It s not required and they have all of the info they need. No copies needed nor will I allow them to take a copy.

Call me paranoid, but there are things that can be used by the less than honest people to make false I.D's and such.

I agree...Obviously you are the best protector of your personal/private information...

They only need the information temporarily to complete the transaction...Verify who you are, and if everything is still valid...To photocopy record/retain that information to me would make me a bit concerned...

I agree with RP...It seems a bit over the top and un-necessary...

The information you put on the 4473, if its good enough for the BATFE when and "if" they need it...Thats all anyone will see as far as I am concerned...

I agree with both of you - I just feel uneasy about copying such items. As a matter of fact when the fellow told me he was going to make a copy I asked him to just do the NICS instead which he did.

FWIW, we copied the DL and CHL to put in with the form. Helps when the ATF does an audit.

I believe everytime I have purchased a handgun each of the different dealers have copied my DL and CHL. It's not big deal to me. I don't think there is anything on either of those documents that you cannot obtain from publicdata.com. The only number I worry about is my SS number.

All the information that is on your CHL goes on the Form 4473 except your photo and biometric information (height, etc.).

I don't like having copies of my documents made, but that's life these days. I did not even get a credit card until I was about 30 years old. I had to do it because it was no longer possible to reserve a hotel room or rental car without one.

I'd take my business elsewhere.

Sarah Brady gets wind of this, it will be yet another "common sense" law she wants passed. No thanks.

Gun shops I deal with have always copied mine...I don't mind.

Your bound book contains the name, DL# and address. How does having a copy of the DL (and CHL) "help" with ATF?

Proves the information on the 4473 matches the documents provided. apparently before I was there some sort of issue arose with ATF questioning the data on the 4474.

Ain't that just the kettle calling the pot, black!

I'm sorry, but considering the track record and general consensus of the legitimacy of the BATFE, the same overly critical scrutiny should be applied to that entire organization...

I'm feeling rather cynical this morning...I apologize, I had too much cobbler last night...;-)
