Lately I'm seeing a few posts concerning "whether a metal detector is present or not". Is this a factor in carrying? Does the presence of a detector alone make it "off limits"? Thanks for the help, just want to make sure I'm not missing anything.

No, but if they tell you to turn around and leave, you are obligated to do so. Operators of private events can refuse admittance for all sorts of things like not wearing a shirt or having "gang insignia."

People can argue ad infinitum about publicly owned venues, but you're not going to win this one on the ground.

not legally off limits; well, automatically anyway. Most places who are using metal detectors are not going allow admittance to someone with a concealed handgun.

I wrote most because the State Fair of Texas, which is owned by the City of Dallas, has detectors, but has a provision for CHL people to enter bypassing the detectors.

However, American Airlines Center, which is owned by the city, has detectors and does not allow CHLers to carry.

Just get a Glock 7. You know what that is? It's a porcelain gun made in Germany. It dosen't show up on your X-ray machines, and it cost more than you make in a month.

Never seen Die Hard 2?

Humm, lead will not set off metal detectors, and I don't believe brass has magnetic properties; neither has aluminum.

Yes I know SB501 is about prosecution, but the spirit of SB501 was to allow carry in govt buildings, I do not think they foresaw govt buildings putting up metal detectors and denying entrance.

There is no such thing as a porcelain or ceramic Glock. All Glocks are made from polymer and steel and always have been. This rumor got started (or maybe fueled) by a line from Bruce Willis in the movie 'Die Hard 2: Die Harder':

"That punk pulled a Glock 7 on me! You know what that is? It's a porcelain gun made in Germany. It doesn't show up on your airport X-ray machines, and it cost more than you make here in a month."

This is, of course, complete hogwash. Don't believe everything you see in the movies.

You'd be surprised what I make in a month.

I doubt that the metal detectors used for screening people are much different than the Bounty Hunter I use for finding coins and stuff. Brass, aluminum, gold (I wish I could find some), and just about any metal sets it off.

Actually non-magnetic metals will set metal detectors off, or there is something wrong with the metal detector.

Most metal detectors operate on similar priciples to pay phones rejecting slugs. A conductor passing through a magnetic field will generate an electrical potential (voltage) and a small associated magnetic field of its own. This field will interfere with the field produced by the inducing device and that interference can be detected. Even small objects exhibit enough of this phenoenon to be detected, thus coins passing over magnets in a chute interfere with their own passage enough to shunt them in a different direction, and the magnets are set for the known properties of valid coins.

Try walking though an airport metal detector with a .45 round in your pocket, brass with lead, and it will go off if it's working and adjusted properly.

I have a bunch of staples in my right abdomen and I can set off a hand held metal detector if it's passed close enough to them, and those staples are surgical stainless steel, not magnetic.

OTOH, at the State Fair a few years ago a security person waved a wand at me and passed me through before I had a chance to declare that I was CHL and carrying, and I was wearing a full size 1911.

Yep, and that provision being a real pill to swallow, very public and time consuming, designed so that you are so put off by the time you get through that gauntlet, that your day is so ruined, you either don't stay very long, or never come back...

So much for the City of Dallas respecting the inalienable right to keep and bear arms...

But then again, they got to have a jobs program anyway for some people...(sarcasm)
