It's nice for a change to see a university do something that's not completely stupid.
Jim Brewer is nearing the end of his battle with pancreatic cancer, but one of his concerns was he wouldn’t live long enough to see his 23-year-old daughter Jenny graduate from his alma mater, Texas A&M University, in May.
But Brewer, 57, didn’t have to wait. That’s because Tuesday, the Aggies brought the ceremony to his Austin, Texas, home, where he got to see his daughter with her cap and gown, amid dozens of friends and family, My Statesman reported.
...
As Jim Brewer watched Texas A&M Associate Dean John Hurtado stand at a lectern borrowed from Clayton Elementary School, where Brewer’s wife, Lisa, teaches second grade, he sat in a wheelchair and smiled at Jenny while wiping tears from his face. He held his wife’s hand as Nick, and his other son, Mike, 27, stood behind them.

The father is a civil engineering graduate of TAMU, and the daughter will receive her aerospace engineering degree on 12 May.

Think I might have gotten a little misty-eyed on that one.

I lost my dad to pancreatic cancer. From diagnosis to his passing took only 4-1/2 months, which passed all too fast. Thank God that the A&M administration was willing to bend the rules for this poor family.

That is very cool. Johnny Hurtado is a friend - we were in grad school together at A&M. He is a great guy and I don't doubt he had something to do with getting this ceremony moved up. Outstanding!

As an Aggie, I am very pleased to see that my university has compassion for this father.

Since moving to Texas I have not seen a stronger bond from graduates of any other university.

And they are everywhere! My son gave a yell in Palace Square, St. Petersburg, Russia and had 5 former students, 2 were Russian nationals, reply and they all went to tea!

A friend of mine is an [American] Aggie who spent some time studying in St. Petersburg. I wouldn't be surprised it he was one of those who answered the call.
