Are there instructors teach the LTC class in Spanish? Is there any LTC test available in Spanish? Is it legal?

This is really interesting. I have a feeling you probably have to take the test in English, but the bi-lingual instruction could probably help any non-Native speaker that was qualified for a LTC enough that they could pass it.

Before everybody goes crazy and says why should we let anyone take the class if they can't speak English well... A LEGAL temporary immigrant in Texas who has lived here for 6 months, is eligible for a LTC. Think of a Canadian working for IBM in Houston for a couple years or a Mexican working for a Mexican or US company in the US temporarily.

Anyway, I was going to be transferred to Argentina a few years ago for up to two years...didn't end up happening, but I worked there for about a year (WITH A LEGAL WORK VISA, by the way ). My Spanish is somewhere between bad and terrible. I was getting better and if I had taken the transfer I would have ramped up significantly with help from my company.

But anyway, I remember the law was, if you were going to drive, you had to pass the driver's test in Spanish. There were schools that would coach you in English, but the test (100 questions) was only given in Spanish. Weapon permits were near impossible to get, but in any case all your interaction with the government was in Spanish, so for new arrivals they usually sent a lawyer with us.

I think in Texas you can take the DL test in Spanish...but I doubt the LTC test.

This is even more interesting that 30.06 and 30.07 signs are mandated in Spanish. Why is this necessary if all LTC holders supposed to be able read and pass the LTC test in English?

Further more, if Texas can trust someone who may not be proficient in English to operate a 6,000 lb motor vehicle, shouldn't they also trust the same people with a handgun?

I suspect the legislature didn't think about it too much. Better to pass something that doesn't, on its face, exclude those who speak Spanish rather than have the legislation held up on the pretext that its discriminatory.

Note that 30.06/30.07 don't include any "official" translations. If they cared that much, they would have included the translations.

When the Texas CHL 1st started there was a Test in Spanish.. I believe it was made up by the Texas Rifle association.

and heard someone got upset and about 2 years later there was not one in spanish.

It was pretty handy.

This question came up in my Instructor class last week. The instruction may be in Spanish, but the test must be in English.

Dare I point out that those most likely to protest English-only tests are generally so horrified of guns that they may not get around to protesting this.
