Break open won't open

My H&R .223 single shot is empty and I can't open it. Any ideas what the problem is?

Sounds like something is jammed in the action or the release lever isn't working properly.
If it is the latter you will need to remove to stock to get at the release linkage. It may take a gunsmith.

I don't know if it makes any difference on the side lever models, but have you check to see that hammer is not cocked?
