The MOSSBERG Lawsuit against drop in trigger assembly manufacturers.

Mossberg claims these 12 companies are infringing upon one of their patents. The suit was filed in the District of Connecticut against 12 different companies producing drop-in trigger packs for AR-15 rifles:

Elftmann Gun Products
Battle Tested Equipment
Franklin Armory
Patriot Ordnance Factory
Black Rain Ordnance
DOA Arms
Tactical Fire Control
Hogan Mfg
KE Arms
TriggerTech
Rise Armament
Velocity Triggers

Here's the patent in question.

It looks like it is covering a specific type of trigger replacement for ARs that consists of the whole mechanism being in one piece that then is held in place by the two pins through the receiver. If you don't have to wrestle with the spring to get the pins in, it might be covered by this patent.

Suffice it to say, nobody over there is very happy with Mossberg over this.

If anyone has ever read anything about software patents and wondered why all the computer nerds out there hate them, here is a perfect example of the broken patent system in the US.

How long is it good for? Must be expiring soon. By the way, I have a "business method" patent on commuting to work each day by car. All of you owe me a license fee for doing it (you know who you are) and I will be bringing nuisance lawsuits against every one soon.

I'm still smarting from the court invalidating my copyright on the "Happy Birthday" song. Now it seems I only own a particular piano version of it.

Timney has been selling a drop in AR trigger like that since before Mossberg made ARs. Maybe someone should point that out to Timney. Just sayin'.......

I believe Mossberg purchased the rights to the IP. They're protecting an investment. Be an interesting case to follow.

Was going to purchase a Mossberg shotgun to put into our tornado shelter/safe room, but after reading everything regarding this lawsuit filed by Mossberg, I will NOT be buying anything Mossberg. Will also be sure to tell my friends about this.

I don't know about all of the details of this suit but my mother did have a patent once that was infringed on by a very major company. She did not have the money to fight the suit and was bought off for $2,000 while the company made multi-millions. The guy who patented the variable speed windshield wiper had a lawsuit against Ford for what must have been a million years before they paid up (big time). Infringement of someone's patent is theft. Rather than getting involved with it's "the firearm industry" just think of it as if someone was stealing from you.

The Electronic Frontier Foundation https://www.eff.org/ has been writing a lot of articles on patents and patent abuse lately. Apparently some car manufacturers are starting to sue people for modifying the computers on their cars to get better performance. https://www.eff.org/search/site/patent
