FBI Says: "I See You!"

According to the GAO Report, FBI’s Facial Analysis, Comparison, and Evaluation (FACE) Services unit not only has access to FBI’s Next Generation Identification (NGI) face recognition database of nearly 30 million civil and criminal mug shot photos, it also has access to the State Department’s Visa and Passport databases, the Defense Department’s biometric database, and the drivers license databases of at least 16 states. Totaling 411.9 million images, this is an unprecedented number of photographs, most of which are of Americans and foreigners who have committed no crimes.
As the Report points out, many of the 411.9 million face images to which FBI has access—like driver’s license and passport and visa photos—were never collected for criminal or national security purposes. And yet, under agreements we’ve never seen between the FBI and its state and federal partners, the FBI may search these civil photos whenever it’s trying to find a suspect in a crime.
The single bright spot in the report reiterates that FBI decided not to allow searches of civil photos enrolled in NGI to “better protect individuals’ privacy.”
Sure. And "if you like your doctor, you can keep your doctor."

Per the GAO report linked in the article, Texas is one of the states that DOES supply driver's license photos to the FBI for this activity. I asked the lady at the DL office when I had to go there to renew recently why she wanted me to take my glasses off for my photograph. Her reply was: "the facial recognition system needs that." Didn't think too much about it at the time. Think more about it now.

It's one thing for the government to know where I live, to be able to access my personal information, etc. But for them now to theoretically be able to take a photo of me walking down a public street and then be able to know who I am...

I know I'm getting more paranoid in my old age, but that just sort of creeps me out right now. Anybody else feel that way about it?

They can do a whole lot more than that.

Just assume that they can look at any camera and listen on any microphone that is connected to power and connected to any network... because they can.

I'm interested in the facial recognition failure rate.

Anyone know?

The powers that be would have us believe it's perfect.

Plus, it can't be fooled.

I sincerely doubt it...

Where's my Groucho glasses and nose?

My cell phone always knows where I'm going! As soon as I get into my truck to leave for work I get a traffic update telling me how long it's going to take to get there. I tried to fake it out on day but it knows better. And I don't get them on weekends, unless I'm going to work! Spooky.

I can shop for something at home and ads for it will pop up at work and vice versa.

Anything you post on social media, internet searches, financial transactions, phone calls, information in your phone is up for grabs.

I think movies and TV have a way of telegraphing what is or is to come.

Yet they can't break into an Apple iPhone 5c without paying 7 figures to some hacker?

More likely don't want to admit that they can.

How at risk are pre-paid cell phones?

Do these el cheapo units come with GPS?

I doubt it.

Mine cost a whopping $20.00.

If your paranoia gets to be an over the top anxiety producer consider a prepaid el cheapo cell phone that comes with no bells or whistles, or horror of horrors - get rid of the tracking device you so willing carry every where you go, ah, I mean smart phone.

Then get therapy for your smart phone obsession, as you'll undoubtedly go through withdrawal.

You'll bemoan the tracking by the government & businesses, but keep the tracking device with you and turned on, so please no more complaining about being tracked.

Why?

Because you can yank out the batteries and leave the nasty little device in the trash, but the dirty little secret is: You're addicted so you're shamefully willing to be tracked. You can't do without your "Precious".

Suckers!

Burner phone isn't attached to you though is it? I know my cell phone is tied to my name thru the account information.

The data that is actually stored in the phone (such as phone logs, contact lists, texts, emails and so on) is encrypted, that is nearly impossible to get to without the encryption key. To gain access to the camera and microphone and get them to stream live video and audio out is comparatively easier.

Two completely different items.

I believe that all current cell phones are required to have GPS capability for e911 service.

You may not be able to access it, but it's there.
