This is the one I've been running since November 2014 and I'm pretty happy with it. I'm running a 32GB card which gives me about 3 days of recording. The two times I've want to keep something I've immediately moved the card to my tablet and copied the video over.

I understand that some folks who are really into this can set up a real time data stream of the camera to a cloud service. This via a 4G data connection with a mobile phone. Because of plan data limits, you may not want to continuously stream, but activate the streaming during/after an accident/incident/vehicle stop/tornado...etc. The idea being if your camera is damaged, stolen, confiscated, etc. the record remains backed up to the cloud...suitably encrypted with a very strong cypher, of course...

This technology is really cool. I think the police dash and body cams are a great idea for protection of the officers as well as the public. The camera (mostly) doesn't lie... :biggrinjester:

Anyone have any tips for keeping the suction cup stuck to the windshield in the Texas heat? Mine stays put during the winter, but this time of year if I leave my car parked outside for more than 30 minutes or so, the suction cup loses suction and the camera falls to the dash.

I am using a different camera than listed in the OP.

I replaced the rubber on the suction cup with 3M molding mount 2 way foam tape. It has survived 3 summers.

If you can find a good solution to keeping it on the windshield, you can mount it behind your rear view mirror and it's not a driver distraction... If you have power to your rear view mirror, you can tap in to that (with a purchased wire kit or home brew solution) and you won't have to hang the 12v wire to your power socket for camera power.

Once you find a good mounting location the camera can be aimed by adjusting the mount.

I use a GoPro in the windshield of my car. Wide 170 degree or so viewing angle.
It's an older model with a slight bit of "fish eye" effect, but good enough to read license plates in adjacent lanes.

1080p resolution and I can record about 25 GB of video on the card. It's battery driven, so I have to recharge every few days.
But it works well. I just delete the videos I don't want when I recharge the camera.

I have it on when my car is in motion. Hopefully I won't need the video, but you never know.

As another option, there are also dashcam apps available for your smartphone, which are convenient if you already mounting your phone on dash and don't want to spend more on a dedicated camera or don't want to have more gadgets up there. CaroO Pro (there is a free version too) is one I have used before, is pretty neat. It can also tie into ODBII devices to monitor stats like RPM, engine temp, etc.

A visor mirror light is pretty easy to get to also.
