I've been wanting to get my CHL for some time now but have been putting it off for months now due to a hectic schedule... well, something happened over the weekend that made me bite the bullet (bad pun) and start the process... the condo where I live is on the Sharpstown Golf Course and just a few blocks away from where this occured:

Cashier gunned down in southwest Houston
Copyright 2007 Houston Chronicle

Police are searching for a pair of armed robbers who fatally shot a cashier late Saturday during a hold-up at a southwest Houston convenience store.

One man forced an employee to the floor shortly before 10 p.m. at a Speedy Mart, 9401 Harwin while a second went behind the counter with the cashier, identified as Mohammad Khan, 37.

The man took the cash tray from the register, then shot Khan several times before fleeing with the other robber, police said.

Khan, who lived in the 6500 block of Sandspoint, died at the scene, police said.

The robbers were identified only as Hispanic men in their early-to-mid 20s. Anyone with information about the case is asked to contact homicide detectives at 713-308-3600 or Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS.
The BGs took the money and then shot the clerk... with monsters out there like that don't put off getting that CHL another day! On a side note, here is a good video from John Stossel regarding the myths of gun control.

This pretty much puts the lie to the standard police response of "give the bad guys the keys/money/car/whatever and no one will get hurt." :banghead:

Of course, many of us here already recognize this, which is why we go armed. :fire

Here's a few quotes on preparedness.

"In ourselves our safety must be sought,
By our own right hand it must be wrought."
-- William Wordsworth

"The frightening nature of knowledge leaves one no alternative but to
become a warrior."
-- "don Juan," from Casteneda’s A Separate Reality (p. 150)

Invest in preparedness, not in prediction.
-Nassim Taleb

Therefore, since the world has still
Much good, but much less good than ill,
And while the sun and moon endure,
Luck's a chance, but trouble's sure,
I'd face it as a wise man would,
And train for ill and not for good.

-AE Housman

I was listening to the news 2 nights ago and it showed a convenience store being robbed. Two thugs pull a shoty out and demand the clerk to open the register. He complied, and then was shot point blank in the back of the head.
He was 50 something years old, I believe.

"This pretty much puts the lie to the standard police response of "give the bad guys the keys/money/car/whatever and no one will get hurt." banghead " (it needed repeated!!!)

True, and amazing lucid coming from someone whose "separate reality" depended on 'shrooms and peyote!
