We now have a couple of Glock 19's for home defense. Wife ask me what to do if she ever had to use it finding a home intruder in the house. I told her to empty the gun.
Now that I think about it might not be the best advice.
What should one do????

:iagree: But ONLY as many times as needed to stop the threat. "Overkill" will be frowned upon. ;-)

:iagree: Id shoot until they hit the ground or fleeing. Id be prepared to put more in them if I still felt they were a threat to me or my family.

Just seconding the simple and true answer given by Russell. It can get deeper if you want to talk more detailed tactics (when to reload, etc), but any cool tactics still rank second to stopping the threat.

Emptying the magazine is actually a very common occurrence because the repeated squeezing is a stress/fear reaction. In a fight or flight state some people will actually continue to squeeze the trigger even after the magazine has been emptied and the slide has locked back.

In the heat of the moment she's going to react the way she's going to react relying primarily on instinct and muscle memory.

A similar question was asked at my CHL class. The instructor pretty much said the same thing. Shoot until the threat is removed and then stop.

Would not be good to have an empty magazine and find out there is more than one bad guy.

:iagree: I carry 12+1 in the pistol and 14 in the spare mag. Whatever it takes to stop the threat.

Maybe he has a .45 auto revolver with the "half-moon clips".

Well let's see... My shotgun is loaded with #1 buck, so each hit is 15 .30 caliber pellets.

If I give him all 8 rounds, that's 120 projectiles.

Does that sound like overkill? :headscratch

Seriously, shoot until the threat is over.

Note: Him being on the ground does not necessarily mean the threat is over if he still has a weapon in his hand.
