Ahhhhh....the Texas Summer. Torrential rains in May & June....Blistering hot as hades July & August. Welcome to the typical Texas summer. This July & August weather is just about how I remember it as a kid growing up in North Central Texas back in 1950's & 1960's.

While living in Fort Worth in the 50's our every day summer procedure was staying in in the house till 10 am. Then off to the swimming pool until 4 pm to partake in the afternoon baking in the sun. At least 5 days/week. Then having Mom drive us into downtown Ft.Worth to catch the Saturday afternoon matinee. Leave the house at 11:30 am. Get to downtown F.W. about 12 noon. Matinee starts at 1pm. Over at 3:30. Mom drives allll the way back to downtown .F.W.(you see back then, Fort Worth did not have ANY freeways. None, nada, zip. I-35W MIGHT have have been a freeway. I don'tremember)That was before the interstate highway system came into being. They started building the West Freeway(now I-30) in Ft.Worth when I was about 8 or 9. We used to ride our bikes on the freshly poured concrete from Horne St to Hwy 183, near Carsewell Air Force Base.

But I digress. My Mom was so good to us neighborhood kids(about 8 or 9 of us, all within +/- 2 years of each other). She was the neighborhood chauffeur.
Not a day during the summer that she didn't spend at LEAST 4 hours per day of driving us kids around. Thanks Mom! I love you!

At the nearing of the end of the summer...about this time in August each year, after the days, weeks, and months of catering to our neighborhood gang, do you know what the most cherished and long sought after words Mom wanted to hear were?

BACK TO SCHOOL!

You should have gotten to the pool earlier so you could have made it home in time for Slam Bang Theater - what were you thinking?

My friend, that time period to which I was referring, was before Channel 11, KTVT, or Icky Twerp( and Slam Bang Theater) had come onto the television screen. IIRC, KTVT was broadcasting part time(like 4 hrs/day) back in 1962. But I DID watch Slam Bang Theater when they came on the air! :cheers2:

Hey Bud, whatcha lookin' at. Hey Bud, whatcha lookin' at! Mmmmm. Channel 11.....Gooooddd Looking! :thumbs2:

"It's 9 o'clock, do you know where you're children are?"

I was actually on Icky Twerp's Birthday show. One of my first grade classmates got selected, on his birthday and I was one of the invited.
