Looks Like I'm Getting A New Doctor

Just got a call from my Sunday School teacher, who uses the same family doctor that we use. He went in to see the doctor today and was asked the dreaded question about whether he has guns in the house. He told them it was none of their business, as I would.
However, I think it's time to find a new doctor, and to let the old one know why I am moving.

How is that question medically relevant and why would they ask?

It's not. It's just big brother doing what he does best.

The American Medical Association has been, for 30 years, been overtly and vociferously anti-gun. They have deemed "gun violence" a public health crisis...despite the steady and dramatic decrease of intentional and accidental homicides during the same 30 years, especially when including the equally dramatic increase in legally-owned firearms.
An article three months ago in the Annals of Internal Medicine specifically suggested that doctors ask, during routine screening, whether the patient owns a gun...then, if affirmative, follow it up with questions about actual ownership, state (kept loaded or not), and how the gun is locked up or secured.

Once upon a visit, our primary care doctor noticed my empty holster and jokingly asked if I had dropped mine.

I am not a huge fan of traditional allopathic medicine, and am skeptical of the AMA by nature, but who's to say the guy wasn't just asking to see if you wanted to go shooting with him?

It's fairly common knowledge doctor's are being prompted to ask. They have been for quite some time like Sniper indicated. The pressure has increased since Obama took office and electronic medical record systems are being forced on to medical practices.
Eventually, we will get to one master health record for all doctors, medical providers, insurance carriers and government agencies will be able to access it. It's all being done in to deliver more efficient better quality healthcare to the patient. This isn't speculation or tinfoil hat paranoia speaking either.

If you like your doctor, keep him (paraphrasing someone I know). You don't know all the circumstances here and he may just be filling in the blanks on the electronic record. If he is anti 2A then consider dropping him but at least find out more, assuming you are happy with him. I say him and of course it may be her. You can always deny answering such questions. NA works very well.

Just look them straight in the eye and respond, asking if they had sexual relations with their spouse this morning and see what their reply will be.

That one used to get me worked up when I read about it, but we live in the country and our doc never asks it because it's obvious that we all have guns.
if he ever did- the answer is:
"does a BB gun count, yes, we have a BB gun."
Now they ask each visit, even to my 7 yo son- "do you feel safe in your home?" Two visits (age 4-5) they asked him to draw a picture of what he thinks of home... scrutinizing the picture and choice of crayon colors.

Yes, I have a gun. My therapist prescribed "group therapy". When I asked what dosage, my therapist replied that we'd start off at 9mm, and work our way up from there.

That's chilling...the slope gets more and more slippery.

As others said it's becoming more common due to various medical organizations and cdc pushing, I haven't had this question on one of the numerous pieces of paperwork yet and I know my dr isn't anti firearms as he has a chl and a collection himself.....but his practice is part of a conglomerate so it wouldn't shock me to see this on a form eventually

Unless this Dr is a trained shrink providing therapy, I think I would find a new Dr.

I have yet to be asked that question but my plan is to tell them to worry about the 250,000 deaths attributed to medical mistakes instead of worrying about whether my firearms are locked up or not. They have yet to kill a single person.
