Staying in San Antonio

So currently there is a thread about places to eat in San Antonio that turns out to have real good timing for me. A second piece of information I personally need is areas to stay at or avoid.
In November we are going to a show at the Tobin Center in downtown San Antonio and then planning to just hang around downtown the next day and see what there is to see. I need to find a place to stay and have never been to San Antonio. I was thinking of finding a hotel downtown or maybe one outside of downtown.
Do any of you have a recommendation of places to stay or advice of areas I might want to avoid in San Antonio?
Thanks

There are some excellent hotels downtown. Kind of depends on where you prefer to be and what you are doing. There are also old historic hotels and new modern ones. San Antonio is a big place with lots of variety to offer. There are definitely areas you should avoid if possible but those are typically pockets scattered around the city.

You should look up the Hotel Contessa. It is right on the river walk and close to all the markets around the area. I love it there. Also offers valet parking.

You wanna stay somewhere downtown on the cheap use Air B&B. We stayed in a guest house with full kitchen for $65 a night in Alamo Heights.
We just got back last night. This time we stayed in the Leon Valley area. The La Cantera mall close to Six Flags was the best outdoor mall I've been too. We went to the river walk as well, gotta pig out on some tacos.

The Menger Hotel is right down town, just south of the Alamo, and houses the bar where Teddy recruited the Rough Riders. Besides Teddy there is a lot of other history to the hotel. It is a beautiful place, has valet parking. Of course it does not have budget rates!
For my birthday one year my wife arranged for the concierge to give me a private tour of the hotel, explaining its history along the way. I don't know how far in advance she arranged it, or if it cost anything, but it was a very nice tour, and probably the best birthday gift idea she ever had.

The La Cantera resort is phenomenal, but of course, not inexpensive. Wife and I stayed there 2 nights but it was comped
