I was discharged with an OTH and are under 21. I was wondering if I could still get a CHL? Since OTH isn't the same as Dishonorable.

Official requirements in Government Code 411.172 (g)(2) says: "Was discharged under honorable conditions..."

Does it say anywhere in your DD214 what your "honor" status is? There is no box for that.

It seems that unless it is a full dishonorable discharge, they would have no way of knowing so that they can deny you. Surely some other member here has a similar discharge status and can tell you if it is an issue or not.

DD-214 has a box for "CHARACTER OF SERVICE." This can be honorable, general, other than honorable, bad conduct, or dishonorable. With general, you can get under honorable conditions.

Only a dishonorable would disqualify you completely, so if your discharge says "other than honorable," then 411.172 would suggest you cannot get a CHL until you turn 21.

There's no witch hunt. You lied, plain and simple. That won't get you very far with anyone on this forum.

Who cares? I'm not trying to commit a crime or anything, infact that's why I'm on here asking. And hey, if it makes your feelings less hurt, I already cleared it up. Better? And I didn't lie. I never said I got a medical discharge, I said that I got discharged for medical reasons, which is true. So I didn't lie.

This type of discharge can only be given when a Soldier has been given significant opportunity to consult with counsel and refute any charges in an administrative hearing before an impartial board of officers with the assistance of counsel. Once again the type of discharge is clearly delineated on the DD 214 and is generally not favored by employers. Once again the veteran's benefits described above are not available to an individual with this type of discharge."

I would think that Honorable and General discharges are the only 2 that would qualify someone under 21 for an LTC.

I only asked because I have spoken to people and read online of people who had an OTH and still managed to get a CHL, I wasn't sure if it was just "luck" or if it qualified. So I just wanted to clear that up.

My best friend in the whole world has an OTH - but he's a fantastic person, a great dad, and an excellent leader in the business world. That one event from 20+ years ago doesn't define him at all. I won't personally judge you for the OTH, so I'll try to help get this thread back on topic.

I don't think they're saying you lied here on this forum. I think (and this is just my opinion) that they're saying you lied to the army, got in, got caught, and then got OTH.

The conversation didn't turn into the 'lie' vs. 'truth' conversation until you mentioned the 'witch hunt' (but you've now removed that comment from this thread). That comment was the catalyst that started this conversation down the path it is now. Let's all practice our nonviolent conflict resolution techniques and bring it back to a normal conversation - starting with you, I hope.

Sooo... Assuming you got an OTH, you should be eligible for your LTC same as any other person. OTH is not a disqualifier, but it's also not an enabler to allow you to get the LTC below age 21. You'll just have to wait until then.
