What is a good .22 rifle for shooting paper in somewhat of an accurate gashion? Without scopes or anything. Out of the box, no changes needed to become good with it. But it must have the ability to be all raced up with toys... This is a play toy, plinkin cans in the backyard kinda thing....

The ruger 10/22 pretty much sets the standard for what you are looking for. I have had several over the years and the one I have now will never willingly leave my collection.

Someone else will come along and explain the ammo differences I'm sure.

Cost? Best place to buy?

Amen on the 10/22. Relatively cheap, and you can do all sorts of mods--to include making it a Gatlin gun. My bud had one with a bull barrell and cheap scope that would drive tacks.
A .22 LR will shoot .22 long, .22 long rifle, and .22 shorts. A .22 mag is a different round all together. .22 cal, but alot more brass + more expensive to shoot.

I picked up a ruger 10/22 from Sports Authority (Galleria location in Houston) for ~$180 out the door. That happens to include a small discount, since I got the display model, which looked like it had never been handled... I think if you get it for under $200 after tax you should be doing fine pricewise.

Anyway, I'm happy with mine. It shoots accurate enough, has been 100% reliable, and from what I hear you can add all the toys to it you want.

The main difference is in the brass.

.22 Short, Long, and Long Rifle only differ in the length of the brass shell. Each one is progressively longer than the other, with Long Rifle being the longest. Any firearm that can chamber a Long Rifle can safely chamber and fire the shorter rounds (although the weaker rounds won't cycle a semi-automatic, and may get caught in the feeding mechanism).

.22 Magnum is a different animal altogether. While bullet diameter remains the same, the cartridge is actually slightly fatter. Chambering/firing a Short, Long, or Long Rifle in a .22 Magnum chamber can result in split brass, with hot gases and powder residue potentially flying backwards through the action and into the shooter's face (or burning the hand, etc).


As for punching paper and short-range varmint shooting, I'm partial to a bolt-action rifle - specifically, a Remington 511. Unfortunately, they haven't made those in years; I found mine in a pawnshop. It's scarily accurate, though. There really isn't anything I can do to "dude up" the rifle, however. If you want to be able to toss all sorts of add-ons onto the rifle, a Ruger 10/22 is probably your best bet.

The Magnum is even longer, and a tad fatter than the LR.

I think your are wondering about accuracy diff??
You will find the biggest contributor to accuracy with a 22 rifle, depending on distance, is buying the same ammo. 22 rimfire is made cheap and fast and there are 1000 of variations of it out there. The so called Match grade 22LR's are (hopefully) the same rounds made with a little more precision.
BUT few people notice the difference because it only shows if you and your gun are very hi end marksman, since your are buying out of the box I think "match grade� would be a waste of money. I would suggest you buy the same brand and type of ammo, other wise you may notice your drop and pattern size change from session to session.

The short was made for squirrels and tree critters,
The Long for slightly larger pests, and I'm told domestic ducks on the water (before it became unlawful to take them on the water).
Long rifle for Rabbits, Turtles, and the like.

Believe it or not, while only a plinking gun today, it was once a primary hunting gun in rural America!!.

If you want a good deal on a target-grade rifle, the best deal out there right now is the Charles Daly/Zastava rifle for $149 from CDNN Sports in Abilene (Mail order only). 10-round single-stack magazine.
Note: You may find you want to shoot CB caps, for low-noise shooting. For those you will need a bolt or pump action, as CB caps will not cycle an auto-loader.

The 10/22 Ruger is the most popular .22 rifle, period. And no other has the range of accessories and replacement/hop-up parts. Very fun, but not the most accurate gun out of the box. 10-rnd rotary box magazine

Marlin 60 is generally considered more accurate than the 10/22, and it's cheaper at around $100. Aftermarket parts are almost nil. Still a great plinker, and accurate enough. Has a tubular magazine, holds 15 or more rounds
