Details are still kind of scarce....CBS 11 is the only local media to cover this shooting so far, and their coverage has a somewhat biased slant in favor of the "victim" who was shot.

CBS 11 News) DALLAS Police say a Dallas man may have taken the law into his own hands Sunday.
Officers are talking to him about the shooting death of a man who may have robbed his wife one day before.
Police say a man in his 30's was shot down in front of an apartment complex on Forest Lane near LBJ. He later died at the hospital.
"The suspect's wife was robbed last night of her cell phone by three individuals. Sunday afternoon, she pointed out one of those individuals to her husband," said Sgt. Eugene Reyes with the Dallas Police Department.
Witnesses say the shooting happened in the middle of the day.
"I heard only three shots," said witness Kevin Hicks. "I went back in to secure myself."
The shooter, according to witnesses, stayed at the scene and said the shooting was self defense.
However, police say several witnesses approached them saying the shooter was on the opposite side of the street than the victim. Police don't know whether the victim had a gun or displayed one.
"We recovered some guns, we just don't know who they belonged to right now," said Sgt. Reyes.

Update: CBS 11 is reporting that the shooter is a CHL holder and was released without charges after questioning. Apparently the alleged robber opened fire first and the CHL holder returned fire from across what appears to be a four or six lane street divided by a landscaped median and killed the shooter.
That's some good shooting in my opinion.

apartment complex on Forest Lane near LBJ.
For the last two years this has been (and still is) one of the highest crime areas in Dallas. The apartment complexes around this location are still inundated with Katrina refugees and are virtual war zones.
Not too many years ago this was a pretty nice area of North Dallas but not anymore. If you travel around LBJ (I-635) and happen to get off in this area for food or gas - be very careful.

It is sad. You get to make your own choices, but you sure don't get to pick the consequences. I am glad the Good Guy made it through.

Here is the report from the Dallas Morning News:
Man killed may have robbed shooter's wife
05:30 AM CDT on Monday, July 23, 2007
By MARISSA ALANIS / The Dallas Morning News
A man who was shot and killed Sunday may have been involved in a robbery the day before in Dallas.
Police said the deceased man was in possession of a cellphone that was taken from the shooter's wife during the robbery at 7 p.m. Saturday. The couple was moving out of Snug Harbor Apartments in the 9500 block of Forest Lane about 12:19 p.m. Sunday because of the robbery.
Sunday's confrontation started as the woman's mother noticed a suspicious man walking across the street. The mother had received harassing phone calls from the stolen cellphone, police said. Her son-in-law confronted the man, who pulled out a gun. The son-in-law, who has a concealed handgun license, shot the man.
The shooting victim was taken to Medical City Dallas, where he was pronounced dead.
Police have questioned the shooter and released him, said Sgt. Gene Reyes. The case will be referred to a grand jury.

I just love it when folks say that...
Who else's hands should the law regarding to my own self defense reside in? Big pet peeve of mine.

I certainly don't envy the man there ... Who was it, Evan Marshall ? that was quoted in a recent thread that siad something to the effect of "The law is what the prosecutor says it is ... "
At least until a jury decides otherwise ...

OK, I gotta ask.. WHY?
WHY confront the guy over a cell phone? I'm fine with the self protection aspect, but why set up the scenario in the first place? If the perp had the phone on his person, the cops have all they need in addition to the identification by the wife. Would the CHL have done it if he wasn't armed?
Flame away...

The news story said the alleged thief was making threatening phone calls to the robbery victim's mother (I'm guessing that the number was stored on the phone). We don't know the exact nature of the threats.
Now, the "book" says that you should report it to the police and let them take care of it. Unfortunately, the police are busy and their priorities may not match yours. You have to ask yourself what you would do if someone were threatening your mother-in-law. (No MIL jokes, please.)

I'm with seamusTx on this one. The good guy didn't know the bad guy was armed. And I highly doubt a stolen cell phone is going to get much of a response out of the police.
Glad the good guy came out on top. Wish him well on the GJ.

Ring...,Ring....
Dallas PD:
Is this an emergency?
SIL (Son in Law):
Yes, the dude that robbed my wife is across the street with my wife's cell phone and calling and harassing my MIL with it.
Dallas PD:
OK sir. We can get there about 2:30PM, say next Tuesday. And next time make sure it's an emergency before you call or we will be there to arrest you before you can hang up the phone. Have a nice day.

No flame, you're right - nothing because he probably wouldn't have approached the BG to begin with and just let it go.

You're right. I called DPD one time because a lesbian couple in my apartment in Dallas were trying to kill each other outside. This was a "good" area of Dallas, btw (near Highland Park). One was beating the other's head into the concrete. It was after I came home from a club, so about 3am Monday morning. I decided to stay up and have another drink and see how long it took. They showed up at about 4:45am. I figure I could have chopped someone up with a chainsaw out front, bagged the body and cleaned up the scene by the time they arrived.
When I called them on noise issues at another place it was usually an hour response time, minimum. Where I live now, it's less than five minutes (not Dallas).
I don't blame the cops either...there just aren't enough of them to go around in the hell hole that is Dallas.
