i just read on the dps site that their are 258,162 active chl license holders in Texas.
this does not include instructors.
does this number seem right to you? i would have thought their would have been at least 500,000. in Texas anyway.

Well, honestly, I imagine that they would know.. Unless, of course, they haven't updated in a while...

That number is correct and yes, we should have 500,000 and more!

Texas is possibly the most difficult and expensive of the shall-issue states. That has to discourage people. Many states require no class or test, just paperwork. Some have fees as low as $20.
I'm curious what percentage of the population is disqualified by a conviction, unpaid child support, etc., and how many are discouraged because they have something questionable in their past that they're unsure of, like having been on antidepressants.

I think the number is low because a lot of people only want to "car carry" with no desire to ever put one on their hip. A lot of them have been carrying this way for years and see no reason to get the CHL. If you could change this mindset the number of CHL holders would be much higher.

Would be nice to know how many people in Texas have out of state CHLs specifically for carrying in Texas.

There's about 6-8 people I know who have non-resident Utah CHP's that are good in Texas...There are lots more I know, but those are the ones I know for sure...

That also doesn't count the elderly people that carry, and have carried forever, that refuse to pay for a CHL.

I've not looked at the DPS stats lately to see how broken out, but instructors, to obtain CHL, must apply like anyone else - and pay the appropriate fee. Our "Proof of Training" is DPS school certification - $100 every two years.
Yep, how this has been summarized for years in the last paragraph of CHL page on our web site is to the effect of "Time, Money and Motivation. Getting them all 3 together at the same time is the tough part."

I agree, especially with the "time" part. The classroom part of the training could be covered in one hour - 90 minutes max, if there are a
lot of questions - but by law, it gets s-t-r-e-t-c-h-e-d out to much more, to no good purpose . . . even for renewal.
And I'm facing this . . . nonsense . . . again next year.
The hoops we have to jump through to stay on the right side of the law . . .

I'd rather the law be on our side, than us being on its right side...
But thats just my opinion...

Mine too . . . I much prefer Vermont/Alaska carry, but this is one of the laws I've decided to follow.

personally, I think the $250-$300 stops a lot of people...
the 14 hours is a managable inconvenience..

People seem to have either time and no money, or money and no time.
Taking a whole day off can be a serious inconvenience for people who run their own businesses or who care for disabled family members.
