Quail Creek Range Today

Finally decided to wipe the dust off a couple of my rifles and hit the range. I went to Quail Creek off I-35W & FM 1171 in Denton County. I had my Yugo SKS that I bought with my C&R license, and an Oly Arms AR-15 16" that I bought in 2002. I just put a new lower kit in the AR-15 because it had a terrible habit of "doubling", when I last took it out probably 10 years ago. I started installing the lower kit a couple years ago and got stuck on the trigger assembly. I finally dragged it out and finished last weekend after scratching and bashing the lower due to my terrible armorer skills.
Both rifles have only iron sites, so I took it to the 25yd range at Quail Creek. I can't sight any farther than that with open sites. I shot both rifles from a rest, kneeling, and standing. About 100 rds through each. Great fun and I felt fairly good with mostly 4-5" groups, which really is the best I can manage with my eyesight. I open carried my Sig 226 since the range policy allows it, though I didn't shoot the pistol. I got an AR15 scope and laser optics for Christmas, which I am going to install on my Bushmaster AR-15 with flat top upper (the Oly has a fixed carry handle). I just ordered a low profile gas block for the Bushy, because the standard AR triangle front sight blocks the scope. I knew I should be shooting my rifles more. Now I got to find a place where I can shoot full auto to exercise my Ruger AC-556 carbine. I'm also planning on getting a silencer for the Bushmaster or for an AR that I'm going to build up from the 2 stripped Spikes lowers that I have...

Go right up the hill to Proactive Defense and enjoy a lot more freedom for shooting on the move, practicing reloads, using cover and more now that it's zeroed

I was there with a friend a few weeks ago after a long hiatus.
Had a very good, friendly, professional experience. RO's were older guys, no hotheads.
YMMV.

Good to hear, maybe they've decided to be more customer focused. QC is pretty close to the house and would be a good alternative.

I've done training and shooting up there. Certainly easier to actually practice up there.

Is that right behind QC? I though I heard some rapid fire yesterday.

You go up the hill to the left of QC chl classroom building. There is a sign, but easy to miss. Parking up there fills up fast, and the road washes out often (so if you drive a sedan you often drag bottom).

One of my bad experiences was the older RO telling me I couldn't pick up my brass, I was sighting in my M1 Garand and had my boy picking up the brass, we were the only ones there and he told me I couldn't pick up my brass, I told him it's mine, I paid for it and I would pick it up! I ended up leaving as soon as I chased down all my empties!

Did someone do some home "gunsmithing" on that gun before you bought it? I've seen some "trigger jobs" by alleged "gunsmiths" that resulted in multi fire guns.

That's definitely a pet peeve of mine. Add a buck to the range fee if you are really that hard hit financially. I can understand safety based restrictions on wandering around the range looking for brass, but restrictions on picking up your own, in a safe manner, don't make any sense, IMHO.
I feel similarly about restrictions on steel and aluminum cased ammo.
