Me and the woman went to Jared earlier to pick up our wedding bands. We're not technically married, but will be making it official on Sept. 8th on the beach in Galveston.

I noticed the security guard in the store had a semi-auto in his holster. I thought that they could only carry revolvers. Maybe something has changed. Also, he was opening the door and smiling for people as they came in. Does that seem like a good tactical edge? It would seem to make more sense for him to be near the back of the store with a clear view of the front doors. I dunno...I've been told I overthink these types of things. I'm just thinking of what I would tell him to do if I owned the store. Opening the door for people probably wouldn't be in the job description.

What's wrong with that? I don't know where to go to buy jewelry. Seemed like as good a place as any. They are a Rolex dealer, which you don't see very often, so they must be fairly reputable. Personally, I think all jewelry is a rip off. I was just thinking of all the guns I could have bought with the cash I laid out today...

Oh, I get it now...those stupid commercials. I just went there because it was close to where I was eating lunch and didn't have to go into the mall.

Kidding aside - - - I have seen several armed security guards with semi autos must be OK. Having a uniformed armed guard at the door may deter more mischief than you may think.

I figured he was there to keep the gang bangers out. Not that I've seen any near North East mall, but I've heard they hang around Grapevine mall now.

Armed Security Guards must have the weapon in plain view. Just like CHL, if the qualify with a revolver that is all they can carry, if they qualify with a semi-auto, they can carry whatever. Their commission card states either NSA or SA.

In addition, those who are qualified with the shotgun carry a STG on the card.

Armed Guards must requal every 2 years. An instructor can use the CHL course of fire, and most do.

He was opening the door and smiling for people like you. He might have a different approach if he perceived a threat.

Thanks for the well wishes and jokes! I only mentioned that it was Jared because I usually don't see armed guards at jewelry stores. In fact, I think the only other security I've seen at one is when I went into Tiffany and Co. to buy a Christmas necklace for her. That was in Northpark mall and I don't think they were armed. At least I don't remember seeing any visible guns. Personally, I think it's a good idea to have armed guards around. I guess that's debatable.

We did go back in there again to pick up her other ring which was being cleaned and re-plated. I noticed the guard was no longer opening the door, but was standing pretty close to it...talking to a couple of cute girls that worked there... I will give him credit that he did take his mind off of that for a second to see who was coming into the store.

I do that sometimes when I see someone I don't recognise; it's considered normal to look directly at someone while you're holding the door for them, so it allows me to size them up for a relatively long time without seeming overly suspicious of them.

I took my wife to a Jewelry store in Universal City a couple of months ago. I think it was Jareds. Jareds had an armed guard that greeted people by opening the door and saying hello. I cannot remember if he had a semi-auto or revolver though. When we approached the store, he was just outside the door.
