I took my CHL course today

EVERYONE that was associated with the course, the range officers, instructors in the classroom wore a 1991 style handgun

They had the ambi extended safety, beavertail grip safeties, and I guarantee they had custom trigger jobs done on them (The head honcho even gave me tips on how to properly keep my thumb on the safety to increase the reaction time for deployment)

The range instructors also are "tactical" instructors for many LEO's in the city of Houston

Perhaps they know something??

Do you mean 1911 style? They are popular for a reason. I've carried and trusted them for longer than I'm willing to admit!

I think I might have narrowed down to 4 holsters so far

I'm a "short fat" guy 5'8" and 250
1. New CrossBreed Super-Tuck Deluxe
2. Comp-tac infidel with Ghurka attachment
3. Milt Sparks Summer Special 2
4. Tucker Awnser <-this one has a HUGE leather slab that seems like it would keep the full size 1991A1 from digging into my spare tire

Anyone out there got one of these I could "try out"?

Nah, I took the course at Top Gun Range back in May, but I'm always curious about different shops/ranges in the area. And btw, I'm also interested in the the best way to carry a 1911 style gun... so post an update when you find something that works!

Hopefully, Longtooth, Charles, and the rest of the 1911 gang will be here shortly. They've probably tried a hundred different ways to wear a 1911, each coming up with something different.
Unfortunately, this is a trial-and-error endeavor, and it WILL end up costing some money. Some here have compared it to the quest for the holy grail.
I have a Summer 2 for carrying my 1911, but still have difficulty hiding it.

I carry a 1911 in a Milt Sparks Versa Max II.

It works very well for me in everything from shorts and a tee shirt to a suit and tie.

Yep, my dead holster drawer expanded to 3 drawers over the years. We talked about starting a TexasCHLforum holster "library" to let people try different ones before buying, but we never got it going. I still think it would be a good service for members.

When I have one on my hip it is a 1911 using a Dillon belt, Perry suspenders and a Galco OWB open top holster covered by a bulky fitting shirt. This is a "plain jane" setup but it works for me.

During the work week my only option is "briefcase" carry and for that I use a Sig 220 in a holster with retention.

Would be nice, I know my wife will not be happy if I keep buying holsters that I don't use at $50-100 a pop

Fining the "right" one w/o dumping good money after bad will definitely help

Anyone willing to loan us NEWBIES their dead holsters just so we can get a feel for em

Man...perhaps a "swap meet" or something would be good

The holster exchange is a good idea if someone can organize it.

You can buy and sell holsters on eBay. Search for "gun holster." You don't find the better ones there. (No one sells a Tucker, apparently.)

That's what I was thinking. Many of us don't want to mail off the holsters we have b/c we use them regularly, but wouldn't mind others trying them on at the forum day.

I have done it & am willing to do it again.
My Tucker stays on my belt though.
