Does it look like one of these?
Winchester Model 1893
Winchester Model 1897
Marlin Model 1898
Marlin Model 16
There are some more Marlins that it might be. I've read that Winchester and Marlin were the only two manufacturers that made pumps with hammers way back when and that they also made them for others and allowed them to put their names on them. Folks like Sears & Roebuck or Montgomery Ward and others.

Marlin acquired National Fire Arms around 1898. They used that name on firearms made for hardware stores. Your SG is most likely a Marlin 1898 or one of it's later derivations. It should compare to the photo that C-dub posted. Marlin made the 1898 in a couple of variations. The safety and extractors differed.

I would definitely have it examined by a competent gunsmith first to make sure it is safe to shoot.
When are you going to get some black powder shotgun shells (They are available as factory ammo and load data exists for handloading) and go shoot it?
Just my .02,

They probably don't have a manual safety only have a "safety" notch on the hammer. I can't find the information I read that mentioned the safety and extractors, but it stated the earlier models had single extractors and later were switched to double. Though theses SG's were made up until 1935, according to Marlin
none are safe for modern ammunition. I'll bet they will slam fire like the Winchester 97 and the Model 12 pump. That is if you hold the trigger down while pumping it the hammer will fire the next chambered round when the bolt is in battery. As
leoncarr stated you should have the gun checked out including the chamber length. I think some may have 2.5 inch chambers. If you get it checked out and it's OK'd for black powder shells it would be a hoot to shoot it I'm sure.
