That is Schlichter's point - not that we have been watching the attempt of a soft coup, or that his fictional hard coup could be attempted, but that even if a coup is successfully repulsed, it will end up successfully overturning the republic because of the measures the incumbent administration would have to take to preserve itself going forward. His prediction isn't so much that one side or the other will win, but that in the process, ALL of us will lose. And it came to pass that the government power abused by the plotters was, in turn, used by the elected government to preserve itself against future threats. Those who had been subject to the failed coup saw no other alternative in order to protect the will of the people. So in a way, the plotters succeeded. They had sought to overturn our Republic. They just weren’t the ones left standing after they did.
Count me among those who believes that. And before anyone cries "racist" at me it has absolutely nothing to do with the abhorrent practice of slavery. The Annoyed Man wrote:The REAL warning is in the last paragraph:That is Schlichter's point - not that we have been watching the attempt of a soft coup, or that his fictional hard coup could be attempted, but that even if a coup is successfully repulsed, it will end up successfully overturning the republic because of the measures the incumbent administration would have to take to preserve itself going forward. That's just one reason why you have to be out of your mind to want another Civil War. Once the process is started, it will have too much momentum for anyone to control the outcome. This was as true of the first Civil War as it would be of any future such conflict. The nature of the federal gov't, the relationship between the several states and that federal govt, and the nature of the relationship between citizens and their govt were irrevocably changed by the Civil War - and many would argue that they didn't change for the better.
I don't think you have to be a racist to appreciate the damage that the Civil War did to the Constitution. Granted, the war ended with freed slaves, and that is a good thing, and I don't want to take anything away from that; but the war also ended with a massive expansion of federal gov't, and for all practical purposes it killed off states' rights. All the nice sounding words in the Constitution, delineating a fairly limited federal gov't and assigning all other rights and powers to the states and to the people, are just window dressing today. To the scholar, the words may still have meaning; but very few people are scholars anymore, nor do they understand the gift that the Constitution is, and the gov't has been trampling on the document without consequence for 152 years now. It's not about to change for the better any time soon. Witness gun rights...... 152 years after the war ended, and we are STILL fighting to get back our free exercise of the 2nd Amendment as it existed ante-bellum.bblhd672 wrote:Count me among those who believes that.
