I just received a replacement license as the address was incorrect, what is the correct process to dispose of the old license?

I cut mine in half and tossed it in the trash. ;-)

Similar....I guess just force of habit really for credit cards and such. When I recently received my updated CHL, I put the invalid one through a cross cut paper shredder....and said a little prayer.

Did not know if there was a process defined by DPS since this is still valid and very cautious about identity thieft.

Unless you want to tape inside your gun safe as a memento (which DPS, if asked, would no doubt say is a "no no" since you're supposed to have only one unexpired license), then yep, destroy and discard. Doesn't have to be cross-cut shred, but should be mangled beyond usage.

I remember my CHL instructor advising to mail it back to DPS and let them destroy it. IMO, a cross-cut shredder works just as well.

That number is not a secret. many places on web to get it as it is public information. Get a license plate and from there you can bactrack thru to every member of the household of driving age (assuming they have valid info at dps) using public records in munites. This includes just about everything but SSN and credit although those are available but can get you introuble for accessing.

True, but that would be done by true Identity thieves and they are not out looking through trash cans, as some ads would imply. However, street people, low level teen thieves and others who are either to ignorant, or what ever, can use the information. Working for a construction company has allowed me to see just how far some people will go to create an ID that they can get a job with.

Also some employers seem to have a problem with us, some person unhappy with him might fax a copy to every one they can think of.

When mine expires, it will be become little peices
