What info is good to keep when you sell a handgun to someone? First time i have done a FTF.

Here are your options:

• Hand over the weapon, take the money, say "Good shooting," and forget about it.
• Ask to see the buyer's driver license, make a note of the serial number and his name for your records.
• Ditto with a CHL.
• Transfer the weapon through an FFL.

I've heard people talk about photocopying the buyer's ID, or taking a photo of it, but many people are going to object to that.

The only legal requirement is that you cannot knowingly sell to someone who is not a Texas resident, under 18, drunk, or disqualified from owning firearms.

Someone else will come along a give a better answer, but here goes.

I don't believe that you are "required" to retain any information if it is a private sale.

However, I know that most people use some sort of contract stating the parties (including address and driver's license #), date of sale, description of firearm and serial # and have both parties sign the document.

If the buyer has a Texas CHL I just ask to see it.
If not I request they bring a photocopy of their Texas DL.
Most will do that. Then I note on it "Sold (gun) (s/n) to this person (date) and have them sign it.

But none of that is a deal-killer if the buyer appears to match my idea of a Solid Citizen. If the deal doesn't feel right, then walk away.

Its always useful to have a bill of sale.

I usually try to get the pertinent info and plug it into a simple boilerplate bill of sale ahead of time so it just needs a signature. THe only time I really insist on this is when I am selling a gun that I filled out a 4473 on.

At the last Pasadena show, I bought two guns face to face. There was an attendee that showed a like new Model 637 to several dealers. As I walked next to him, I asked him if he had a CHL (yes) and if he would be willing to provide his personal info to the buyer (yes). So we walked to the rear foyer and I wrote up a receipt in my pocket notebook which he signed.

Later on, there was an older couple sitting in the 'lunch' room up front. He was trying to sell a Savage single shot 20ga. I gave him cash without so much as asking his name.

Different gun, different seller, different comfort level for me.
