Well, as I mentioned recently in another post, I just accepted a job as a hunting guide on a lease that does not allow handguns. Because of this, I have been shopping around for an alternative to my makarov. Well, I found it.
How's THIS for a carry gun?


I just got it yesterday. It's a Marlin lever-action in .444 Marlin, which is basically a 44 mag that has had the case stretched about an inch. 22" bbl, 5-shot cap(I think) 1.75X-5X40 Marlin scope. Now to find a holster for it

EDIT: And the best part is, my dad had that nice case sitting unused in the back of his closet

That is one nice carry gun. Only thing I see is it is going to take a really long tail shirt to cover it.

Yeah, and it might take some doing to get a CLL (Concealed Longgun License )

Well, it's mostly gonna be for when some genius I'm guiding wounds a pig or Nilgai and I gotta track it down...I wanna have something that still stop a seriously angry 300+ pound pig at close range.

You'll find that Nilgai are very wary animals and extremely tough.

Hogs go down quickly if neck shot (anywhere from behind the jaw to in front of the shoulder). Don't let your clients shoot them as they would a deer (heart/lungs), if you can avoid it.

Just took the Marlin out to the range today, shot it at 50 yds (without sighting it in) 3 rds of Hornady 265 gr FP interlock "Light Mag"

Several Findings:

1-It is currently very hot outside

2-Recoil is very manageable

3-I love this gun

I have named it Boomer
Not very original, but certainly descriptive

50 yds over 1.75-5X40 scope(Bore-sighted only)
Object on left is a quarter


As a side note, when I stopped by at Jim Pruett's gun shop to see if they carried ammo for it, I was told by Mr. Pruett himself that he did not have any but he did have 405 Winchester and it would chamber in my gun I declined

While the .405 has more taper, meaning you might be able to stuff it into the chamber of the .444, the case is more than a quarter inch longer!

You wouldn't have to worry about overpressure, though... that .411 bullet would let plenty of gas escape as it rattled down the .429 bore.

Nice gun, and you can hunt anything on north american continent (up to white and brown bears) with it.

If you are gonna use it as a follow up gun, may I suggest......


Change to see-thru mounts so you can use the iron sights at close range, that's is how I have my marlin lever gun set up for East Texas Swamp Hog hunting because when it gets to knife fighting range all you see in a scope is fur.

A friend switched to one of then cool tatical sights you see on the carbines, an EOTech I think.

Does leupold make see-through mounts?
