It would be interesting to know at what speed that section of track was certified. I believe that both ISIS and Antifa are capable of and willing to carry out terrorist attacks in an attempt to achieve their goals. But I also have a pet phrase "never attribute to malice, that which is easily explained as incompetence." This was supposedly the inaugural run of this train on these tracks. Hopefully, there tests of trains like this on the tracks before passengers were loaded but since it was an upgrade of an existing track bed, maybe there was no additional testing.Geoff Patrick, a spokesman for Sound Transit, which owns the track, said it had recently been upgraded to handle passenger trains from its prior use for slow-moving freight trains.
Does anyone besides me wonder why the biggest mass shooting in the nation’s history (Wounded Knee excepted) dropped completely out of major media’s news coverage within a week or so, when the Sandy Hook, Aurora, Columbine, and Pulse nightclub shooting stories (to name but a few) had such staying power? I have my own theory as to why, but that’s irrelevant. I rode a lot of Amtrack trains when I lived in the Northeast. I have first hand experience with them and they never moved my "confidence" meter very far.

media fatigue. People get tired of reading the same thing over and over. if there is nothing to add the media is just repeating the same things. So people stop reading and miss even when there is something new to add (though I have not seen much in that regard). I is my understanding that speed limits are different than track certifications. The capability of a track to carry a certain types of trains at certain speeds is modified by factors like the number and types of crossing signals in certain areas. Since the section of track for this accident was re-purposed from freight, which tends to move more slowly and weigh more than passenger trains, I was curious about what the certification was. At one point in my career, I was a contractor for Conrail and remember some discussions about track certifications. Perhaps my memory is outdated in today's railroad management environment.Mike S wrote:

I don't think its media fatigue. What I think happened is that the shooter did not fit the MSM's narrative. The shooter could legally purchase the guns, no known red-flags, no criminal record, relatively wealthy, Caucasian, known in the gambling community at the casino property, no social media footprint to suggest he was going to shoot anyone, no known physical or mental health issues, etc. In other words, he did not fit the MSM's narrative.lama wrote:media fatigue. If they didn't over do it at the beginning it might last longer but everyone has to send out the same 3 stories 40 times over the first 2 weeks and then the readers minds move on. particularly when those stories are not even very different from the last time an event like this happened.
Sort of where I was headed with that. I would add to it that the victim group was not on the Democrat Steno Pool’s (AKA “the media”) preferred victims list. They were also Caucasian, relatively wealthy, mostly straight, CW music lovin’, NASCAR fans, a good percentage of which probably voted for Trump. There was no Antifa or Islamic terrorist to caution the public against jumping to conclusions about. The list goes on and on.
