Tuesday, August 7, 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., is National Night Out.
NATIONAL NIGHT OUT is designed to:
- Heighten crime and drug prevention awareness;
- Generate support for, and participation in, local anticrime programs;
- Strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships; and
- Send a message to criminals letting them know that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back.
If your neighborhood has scheduled activities, I think CHL holders are absolutely the kind of stalwart citizens who should participate.

Search Google with "national night out" and the name of your city or community to find out what's happening near you.

I'm a big supporter of National Night Out. I would have posted, but I thought it might be considered off-topic.
One factor contibuting to crime is that people do not know their neighbors, and do not know who belongs in the neighborhood and who is looking for trouble.
Elected officials and candidates visit these events. You can buttonhole them and talk about your concerns.

I'm leaving work in a few minutes and heading for my NNO event in NW Houston.
Meet and get to know your neighbors. You're in this together.
Y'all stay safe!

If we were to ever live in a real neighborhood, I would definitely participate in one of these.
Right now, we live in the country, and we know the people around us.
Thanks for Posting

Great! Just thinking about posting this item and again second guessing it's relevance/importance to the greater good....glad it was posted. My future wife (9/22) and I have recently moved into a new community. Although we are still in the early stage of getting settled in, we have made the observation that 'things aren't like they were when we were growing up'. My future bride remembers when her parents moved in and their new neighbors threw a party just so they could meet everyone! Sigh...not as common in today's nomadic lifestyle. We found out (receiving a flyer in the mail) that our area sponsored a NNO. I was admitedly sceptical. Coming from a Military/LEO household upbringing, I sometimes tend to keep to the perimeter and observe rather than dive in; not to mention I can be a bit pessimistic of intentions. (I made an initial comment that...I bet we are accosted by a soccer mom to join a Dinner Club in the first 15 minutes). I was close..but I digress. I was quite impressed with the turn out. Initially we planned to do a 'walk by' but ended up staying until 9pm. We met a nice couple close to our age and after our discussion which began with "I see you look and feel out of place too", we plan to have dinner and drinks this weekend with them.
