.357 Magnum Loaded to Lower Levels by Remington?

Haven't shot a .357 Magnum handgun since the mid-80s, but in those days the full power loading with a 125 grain hollow point from a 4" barrel had a nominal muzzle velocity of 1450 fps. I was just perusing the Remington website and they list the .357 mag "Ultimate Defense Full Size Handgun" load with a 125 grain brass jacketed hollow point at 1220 fps from a 4" barrel. As I said, I haven't fired a .357 magnum in a long time, so I haven't been keeping up with factory load levels, but when did Remington start down-loading it?

Federal makes a " low recoil " SD round loaded with HXTs also. I bought some for my Mom.

Remington still has a 1450 fps 125 gr .357 Magnum load, listed as UMC. It may be that they have reconsidered what constitutes a defense load vs a hunting load, and changed the label to fit the current market.

A .357 magnum revolver can push a 180 grain hornady xtp bullet at 1325 fps from a 6" barrel. I used Lil' Gun because I have that for my .300 Blackout, saw no pressure signs at max listed load. Not sure about 125 or 158, just borrowed step dad's gun to do a gel comparison with my .357 Sig.

Way back in 1975 in UK (yes you could do that over there in those days) I bought some 125gr Winchester hollow point for my 4" wheel gun my memory may not be perfect but I seem to recall it was only expected to reach 1,200 fps leaving a 4" tube.

Was the standard barrel length for the rated velocity the same then as now?

threoh8,

I suspect that you're right. I notice that the UMC load is a JSP and not a JHP, so it's probably the hunting load and the JHP at the lower velocity is the defense load.

Thanks for the info,

MechAg94,

Wish I could remember, but that was a long time ago.

threoh8,

One other thought: that 125 gr JHP at 1220 fps is not much higher than some 9mm 124 gr +P loads, and not as high as some 9mm +P+ loads. Makes me wonder if 124/125 grains at or around that velocity is not about optimum for 9mm (.355) or .357 as far as recoil, blast, and stopping power go?
