Can anyone explain why?
TV, smart phones, computer games, no? Tell us why. Inquiring minds.....?
In my young/teen days, you can add to that we had civil war for 17 years 1974-1990. I was born in April 1968. So, I could barely remember the golden days of Lebanon. Beirut was the Jewel of the Middle East, the Paris of the Orient.
Back to my experience as Lebanese:
Whether Muslims or Christians, Druze or any other 14 recognized sects:
1) We have very religious and conservative society. faith and fear of God is a cornerstone in the family
2) We have socially conservative society. We do not have single moms and divorce rate is way way low.
3) So called "Broken houses" are exceptionally rare. Lebanese spend more on their kids than themselves. Kids can rely on their parents for life if needed.
4) Government would steal your money (as a tax) and your social security is your family and kin
5) Lebanese value education a lot, 70% or more have a 4-yr university degree. 30%+ have Post Graduate Degree.
6) Lebanon is a tiny country, maybe smaller than DFW metro. Every family is almost know country wide.
7) Speaking of family ties, my extended family now may numbers some 600+ strong members (Some 150+ "houses") and large families are in 10,000 or more. So, the families care about their members and now we have family associations to protect and promote the welfare and interest of theirs members.
8) People are ashamed of criminal members if any in their families
9) Alcoholism is low. Drug addiction is a big problem, especially cheap Chinese made drugs.
10) We are plagued by sectarianism and their militias (arming civilians and having them keep Infantry Squad level arms at their houses). This may lead to spontaneous street clashes between factions
In the days of internet, social "westernization" is happening. We are living in small village world afterall.
