308 bolt gun or 308 AR

I am looking into getting a 308 soon. I don’t know if I want a AR style or a Bolt gun. It will be for hunting and possibly a little ammetur long distance. I am very used to the AR and also Bolt guns so either won’t bother me. I would like to get the most “bang” for the buck. Thanks

I don't think it counts as the most bang for the buck, but my favorite 308 is the Springfield Armory M1A. It is the semi-automatic only version of the M-14, which was, IMO, the best combat rifle the military ever had.
Great for hunting and long distance shooting (well, long for me - 300 yards).
Warning, it is a little expensive though. The lowest price version is still around 1,000 and it is easy to spend almost 3,000 on one.

A good bolt .308 is a gun that you'll never stop using so ling as you shoot. A model 700 isn't my favorite, but it's the de facto standard and does just fine unless you get into dangerous game or very heavy calibers. A new barrel, good trigger and glass bedded stock will make it a tack driver that can take any game animal in North America and most in Africa.

I would say a 308 bolt, and save for the AR. I have both, but really enjoy the bolt action.
Savage, 308, new, right out of the box at 100 yds with a Nikon M308 scope.

The savage is what I was looking at. Can you tell me which model specifically you picked up

Purchased a Savage 10T at Cabelas. It has a 24 inch barrel and threaded for a suppressor. It is heavy and probably not something you would want to carry while hunting unless out of a stand. I need a bipod or sand bags to handle it. I am an old Army tanker, so I like lots of mass, but that’s just me.
There are other shorter models. In my opinion Savage is a good brand for the money.
Only downside is the 4 rd mag. I am saving my money to buy a couple of these 10 rounders.

IMO I would get a bolt gun.
I have an AK 308 (Saiga), AR-10, and a Ruger M-77 in .308.
I love shooting the AK, it is so smooth and easy to shoot. However, it is heavy as frigg and just not viable for hunting.
The AR platform is great, but in 308 it just isn't that fun to shoot. It would probably do fine for hunting. For more long range precision, I would want a bolt gun platform.

The other thought is what do you plan on hunting? If hogs I would think one of those evil large capacity mags would be nice. So perhaps you need a bolt action and a semi-auto. I have a Ruger SR762 and it is heavy and you need a shooting stick (or at least I do).

So, it depends...
I found that I much preferred the AR platform over the bolt action and traded my REM 700 and my Ruger Precision for Ar's in .308 and 6.5 CR. I see no reduction in accuracy and have shot both out to 800 yards. For me the optics make the accuracy difference at those ranges (along with wind calls of course). I prefer the lower recoil of the AR and find it easier to make follow on shots without losing my sight picture. YMMV.
