Coast Guard calls USAF for help finding missing pacific island canoe off Guam. USAF sends B-52, finds canoe.

Nice!! I wonder how much fuel a B-52 burns at low altitude, while just "looking around"
Probably a nice change of pace for the crew and the added bonus of likely the lives of the 6 people on the canoe.

In a case like this, the
additional cost is probably near zero. The crew has to fly for training, anyway. This search mission fits right into the B-25's wheelhouse, so I''m sure it was a training flight, with the search added in.

You are right- the article said they were already flying and in the area. I figured the fuel consumption would go way up while cruising at 19,000 ft as opposed to the 40,000-50,000 ft it's capable of.

Love the B-52, possibly the best bang for the buck investment the U.S. Military has ever made. It is a durable, well oiled, multi-talented machine. Slated to outlive the aircraft that was supposed to replace it (the B-1).
