I was cleaning my new and first 1911 (Taurus), As I was sliding the slide back on paying attention to the aligning the holes, I went to far with the slide, now it is jammed. should I just take it to a smith or is their a trick to getting this off so I can finish putting it back together. Thanks Skip

There is no magazine in the gun, right?

This is one of those times where a gentle hand will work better than force.
While holding the grip in your strong hand, try to wiggle the barrel back and forth, side to side, etc, with your off hand. Do not try to force the slide forward, this will just make it tighter.
If that doesm't work, try wiggling the recoil spring guide rod as well. It's usually either the barrel or the rod that's in a bind.

Good luck

You might also try doing what Gary suggested while holding the gun upside down.

I'll bet you left the magazine in.
I do that occasionally. My forehead has marks from slapping it so often

I just do

The 1911s I'm tinkering with haven't seen a loaded magazine. Sometimes I'll leave an empty mag in it after checking the mag release function.

I don't know about the Taurus, but with my Kimber I need to make sure I dont press the grip safety down while trying to remove the slide...

FP safety

If it has a firing pin safety block, like a Colt Series 80, the safety pushes a pin up that can interfere with the slide. My Llama Max-1 has this, and it was a learning experience for me
