That iconic name the girl who's name was the title of Buddy Holly's hit was a real person and she has passed away. Peggy Sue Gerron was the girlfriend of Crickets drummer Jerry Allison.

Buddy Holly named the group the Crickets since those critters used to be in the garage where they practiced.
The Beatles allegedly named themselves that as an homage to the Crickets.
