Evacuation without CHL?

All,
Just a hypothetical question. I don't have my CHL yet, but I owned a gun for home defense. Let say hurricane Dean got serious like Rita and we have to evacuate from Houston. I packed all my stuff in the car and head North; can I bring my handgun along with me for just in case situations? If the answer is yes, can I keep the gun loaded or do I have to separate the gun and the ammo? I just thought about this and I welcome any other suggestions or advices.
Thanks!

That would fit the description for "Traveling" and yes...you can take it in the vehicle with you, loaded. Just leave it secured when you exit the vehicle, or remove to residence (hotel) upon arrival.

Not taking it would be foolish.

All of the above.
If there were ever a situation which defined traveling and the intetion of the law it would be an evacuation situation.

Furthermore, during an evacuation, the police will be completely occupied with emergencies. During the Rita evacuation, I never saw a police car that wasn't working a crash, breakdown, or medical emergency, or rushing somewhere.

Thanks for the replies, as you can see, I am pretty new to this.
I really need to get my CHL, just in case when a situation like this arise, I would be able to carry it with me all the time even when I am not in the car.
Thanks again.

If you continue to hang out here, you will learn a lot.
