Can I carry during my...

...bowling and golf classes? That's right, I said classes. I waited around until my senior year to knock out all my electives and phys. fitness hours so as to make the year easy. I have been to the bowling alley and the golf course and neither are posted, so I suppose my query ought to be: Should I carry during my bowling and golf classes? My university, like 99.9% of the country's schools, does not allow weapons on campus, CHL or not. So, would I be allowed to carry during a university activity/class that is OFF campus?
If you think this is one of those "just carry and keep your mouth shut about it" situations, feel free to say so.

I'm sorry, but I think this falls under school sponsored sporting event and that you can't carry.
§ 46.035. UNLAWFUL CARRYING OF HANDGUN BY LICENSE HOLDER.
(b) A license holder commits an offense if the license holder intentionally, knowingly, or recklessly carries a handgun under the authority of Subchapter H, Chapter 411, Government Code, regardless of whether the handgun is concealed, on or about the license holder's person:
(2) on the premises where a high school, collegiate, or professional sporting event or interscholastic event is taking place, unless the license holder is a participant in the event and a handgun is used in the event;

In addition to Mithras post, your degree would be in jeopardy if the school found out you were carrying.
There is probably mention of the "gun free zone" in the student handbook they gave you a few years ago. You probably even signed papers saying you were aware of their rules.
So, even though your question is about criminal trespass, the more glaring problem is they could kick you out of school altogether.

If none of the above apply, then you are still at a school sponsered class that fall under school and I believe, state rules and/or laws.

I disagree. I don't believe a bowling or golf class meets the definition of a sporting event or interscholastic event. If it does, then every gym class is a sporting event. If the class was held at the local bowling alley and it did meet the definition of a school sponsored event as some are suggesting, then anyone entering the bowling alley with a concealed handgun would be in violation, not just the students.

Could it be that this is a situation where ignorance is bliss? Other bowlers could not be expected to know that there was a school sponcered event going on. If one did realize it I would imagine a CHLer would be OK as long as they stayed away from the student lanes.
Then again maybe common sense just wouldn't apply.

I can't answer whether he would get in trouble with the school or not, but I do not believe he would be violating any of the concealed handgun law. My interpretation of sporting event would be, say, the game between UT and A&M, a track and field event, etc., not four students at the local golf course being taught how to golf. You are correct about common sense. I don't think the legislature would be too pleased if a state school expelled a student in the example given.

I, personally, wouldn't want to be the test case for this one. Plus, when was the last time you heard of someone being attacked on a golf course?
You've always got your 7 iron for defense anyway...

It's a class, right? Forget all the technicalities being raised here. You know what would happen if you got "made", right?
Don't do it.

Carry at your college golf or bowling class is a Third Degree Felony;
§ 46.03. PLACES WEAPONS PROHIBITED. (a) A person commits
an offense if the person intentionally, knowingly, or recklessly
possesses or goes with a firearm, illegal knife, club, or
prohibited weapon listed in Section 46.05(a):
(1) on the physical premises of a school or
educational institution, any grounds or building on which an
activity sponsored by a school or educational institution is being
conducted, or a passenger transportation vehicle of a school or
educational institution, whether the school or educational
institution is public or private, unless pursuant to written
regulations or written authorization of the institution
(g) An offense under this section is a third degree felony.

Say a mad man came into the bowling alley and starting opening up on people........
And you, the student took him out.
Would you still get in trouble?
Yeah, and then the bad guy would probably sue you.

This goes back to the earlier question. I am bowling with my buddies at a public place and a school group shows up so I have to leave? doesnt sound right.

If this is a correct interpretation, there doesn't appear to be an exemption even for the owner of the bowling alley. If a school is having a field trip to the museum, I face a third degree felony if I'm armed while there at the same time? If true, that section of the law needs to be fixed badly.

You would have to know a school group was present in order to be in violation. ("Intentionally", "knowingly")
Never heard of anyone getting busted in this kind of situation, where they are simply carrying in some building and a school group of some kind just shows up.
Smells like a dead horse.
