Okay, first of all let me say how happy I was to find this forum for Texas CHL'ers. This is my first post and I know I will learn much from the widom on the forum.

My question: I have been reading about the new law for renwal. Basically it states that renewal time has been extended from four years to five and that this is only for licenses that expire after Sept. 1st, 2005. Am I interpreting this correctly?

Now for the clarification, if my CHL expires say in Jan. of 2007, does that mean that it will be extended for one more year? Will my CHL be legal until Jan. of 2008?

It’s my understanding that New or Renewal CHLs issued will be for 5 years, not an exsisting CHL. Therefore when you renew your CHL in 2007 it will take you to 2012. To do otherwise, Texas would be out the expense of issuing free of charge a special one year CHL for the interim period for each person. Each CHL holder would need this to present not only to Texas LEOs but out of state LEOs as well.

I don't go back to Instructor classes until the 10th, but I was told when I called last month that new issue will be still be 4 years and all renewal after Sept. 1st. will be 5 years.

No, your license expires on the date listed on the license. When you renew it, you will have a 5 year license.

my wife fell through the crack on this one.

Her CHL woud expire 9/14, so of course she took her class and requalified in the suitable time frame, as dictated by DPS, and her license has been renewed, but because it was renewed before 9/01, it's only for four years.
