Good idea. I would have used a softer approach to start the conversation.
I graduated from SHSU in 82. Loved that campus. Do they still have a shooting team? My first formal training came from the SHSU Pistol Team. It was a blast to travel around the state to competitions and have the university provide free range time and ammunition.

Good lick, Russell. I think that your head-on approach will tend to help draw people to the topic (thinking that you're a dim-witted Trog and, therefore easy pickins') that will end up being astounded at the clarity of your position as well as its rectitude.

Sets a fine tone with me Russel...
I figure there will be supporters and detractors both that will just lurk and not participate, already knowing what the response will be to their thoughts...
Thats the way most go when it comes to this issue...
Thats also why we don't see very many moderates or pro gun-control people come here to interject their opinions...

Russell,
As the argument heats up, here's a few sites that provide fairly decent statistics on crime, etc.

Some of those folks are leaving themselves wide open. I can see why you are fighting your urges.
Russel is probably going to determine that that trying to convert antis is like trying to wrestle pigs.

Greased pigs...
But no, I think Russell knows what he got into...He cleverly interjected a hot button issue in an environment that has the line in the sand clearly defined...
I believe he was right in bringing it out for discussion, even though we know where it was going to go...
I kinda like where its going...

The views that some of them have are extremely weird and lead me to believe that they had those views pounded into their had as a child without any thought given to said view on their own about the meaning of them.
Need to send them to the Second Amendment re-education camp.

How about you post one of the BEST information sources on the web!
Gun Facts has 89 pages of FACTUAL information. Divided into chapters based on gun control topics (assault weapons, ballistic finger printing, firearm availability, etc.), finding information is quick and easy.
I recommend EVERYONE read this!!!
the FACTS dont lie, the numbers dont lie. and this is information we ALL need in order to combat the anti's bogus propoganda

While I found the reference an interesting read, I also found many inconsistencies and incorrect statistics. One example:
On page 59 (59 of 96 of the pdf file) there is a chart showing homicide rates for a number of countries. The study was done in 1998, so the data is likely to be from no more than one or two years before.
The USA is shown having a rate of around 7 per 100K population. England & Wales are shown as somewhere around 2 per 100K. These numbers are roughly in line with what I have seen in other sources.
Meanwhile, there is another chart on page 24 of 96 showing homicide rates for England and Wales over time. This chart seems to show a rate of around 14 per 100K population for 1997. This is much higher than any figure I have ever seen for England and Wales. I'm sure this chart is incorrect.
One thing is for sure is that both charts can't be right.
On the whole, I would say this reference has some serious fact checking problems. In my judgement, it is not reliable. I would not be surprised if some SHSU people picked up on these inconsistencies and used them in their anti-gun arguments.

I would suggest a new sign for schools I know it would help.
(( Bad guys with GUNS not allowed!))
That would stop any more school killings for sure.
