You can carry in a church (in Texas) as long as it is not posted.

You need a new instructor. Churches are NOT off limits unless properly 30.06 posted.

Thankfully, mine is not posted....and gets "carried in" every weekend by several folks.

I could probably find at least a dozen on any given meeting. About 10 more on the way from the CHL class...held at the church building.

Your instructor was incorrect. Here are the controlling sections of the Penal Code.
Chas.
§ 46.035. UNLAWFUL CARRYING OF HANDGUN BY LICENSE
HOLDER. . . .
(b) A license holder commits an offense if the license
holder intentionally, knowingly, or recklessly carries a handgun
under the authority of Subchapter H, Chapter 411, Government Code,
regardless of whether the handgun is concealed, on or about the
license holder's person:
. . .
(6) on the premises of a church, synagogue, or other established place of religious worship.
(i) Subsections (b)(4), (b)(5), (b)(6), and (c) do not apply
if the actor was not given effective notice under Section 30.06.

PC 46.035 lists church as one of the places you can't carry. But further down it says it doesn't apply if not posted.
Edit: I was too slow.

In my mind you did the right thing by coming here and posting the question. Too often I’ve run into folks that have made wrong statements, been called on it, and then state “Well that’s what my CHL instructor said…as if an instructor could never be wrong, so case closed.
Every month there are questions brought to this forum by folks that heard questionable things during their classes, and some of them are truly outlandish.
The value to this site is there are extremely knowledgeable folks here (Charles and TXI for example) that will be able to post the applicable text from the current code. If it’s clear, then were done. If it’s not, then generally a lively discussion will ensue and enough information will come out on all sides of the discussion that you can go away with a much better informed opinion on the subject.
Unfortunately, this is one with a clear cut answer, so I don’t get to sit back and watch the fur fly
Now if you had asked “Should we carry in the house of the Lord or better yet “Should we
open carry in the house of the Lord, this probably would have been a more lively thread...excuse me while I run for cover

Quote: "You need a new instructor."
Unfortunately, the "amendment to the 46.035 amendment" has not always been clearly communicated TO some instructors in the original school. I've an old friend who almost got kicked out of an instructor school a few years back for angering a presenter who was in the process of NOT teaching that it is typically OK to carry in church. He had to point out to her in the material where the 4 locations were removed. And lots of the other instructors there subsequently thanked him for it.

Telling us we cant carry in church will do about as much good as the fellow today that told me I cant carry in a hospital.
We better be able to carry in our church or at least 5 of us will be arrested every Sunday. 4 that I can guarantee tonight at mid week worship service. One was absent due to work.

it was in government issue new testament they gave before i was sent to the jungles, read it many tiems while I felt my life was gonna end short!! Everywhere the desciples went they carried a knife and a staff..
That is all i got on this subject so I have nothing else to say here..... any further answers can probably be found in the little book and since it has been so long since i read it; 1966 to be exact. (-;
